Thinking of maxing bone wall and mages. No skelly warriors. All
ranged attack. Will this be viable for long? Idea is to hold back the
melee attacks with the wall. Advice please.

I think at fairly high levels you would be doing about 500 damage per
mage. If you combine that with Lower Resist, then you get to a max of
1000.

I think it depends what you mean by viable. You won't be leading many
baal runs but I think you would be ok in low player count games.

maybe Bone Prison rather than Bone Wall but I'm not sure.

You are mistaken. The skeleton warriors ARE the bone wall. These guys
can take hit after hit after hit without dying. Seriously, at level 20
with mastery, 1 skeleton warrior can tank tons of guys in Hell. Having
10 of those dudes in the front lines is better than bone wall because
they do damage, and the enemies focus on them too, plus you are not
wasting skill points by putting 20 into mage and 20 into mastery - you
can put into warrior and get mastery benefits too.
I don't think mages do enough damage on their own anyway. The cold
ones are nice for freeze, the poison are nice for preventing monster
heal, but they don't really do high damage, and they die in 1 hit in
Hell. Warriors don't.

Yeah, but...

Your ability to gain experience will suffer. You don't get experience
from enemies that die after hitting a bone wall/prison.

He won't be using that trick, or at least I assuem he won't. He just
wants a barrier over which his mages can shoot over/through.

I do not think the mage would be good enough. The mages may get stuck in
narrow area while in open places they will choose their own target. Ten
mages on one target could be good but ten mages on four would not. You can
still create a pure Boner or a hybrid. You imprison the monsters with BWall
or BPrison then you kill some with BSpirit and finish the group with CE.
Attract is good to concentrate a pack of monsters and to save some points in
CE. I max CE in the previous ladder but I will not this time.

Keep in mind that the spirit type of monsters will pass through you BWall or
BPrison so I would put one point in all the summoning tree to get a golem
and some revives. It is not hard for a new Necro to get +6 to all skill so
you would get 7 revives, some so so Skels as a meat shield. The revives
would still be very good and the golem too.

Thanks for all of the replies. I'm always looking for different ways
of building. Other than skellies and mages and revives etc. what
unusual builds are there for necros? They seem sort of one dimensional.

You might want to try the Whack-a-mancer!

Max bone armor and synergies, because that armor is your shield.
You might use poison via a dagger, if you want to max the poison
skills... but count your skill points.

Max bone spear because it's a synergy to bone wall, which is your
crowd-control spell.

A point in each curse, because they're all useful. Especially
confusion.

But your main killing is you and your sword/axe/mace/dagger/bow, your
golem, and your merc.
