He saw the sign. He was in Albuquerque. He could turn left. Or he could
turn right. He chose to turn right. Later, he chided himself, saying, "I
KNEW I shoulda taken the left turn at Albuquerque."

I muled my Horadric staff over in order to have one on file, and in doing
so, I handed it over to the mule in order to get the quests to work. Well,
somehow I messed up and now I have two staffs on two different mules,
because no character can hold more than one, but the sorceress, who alone is
in NM, can not pick up either one of them now if the mule drops it. Neither
can she receive either of them via the trade screen. Can anyone tell me
what happened?

Chars in one difficulty can't pick up staves made in a different
difficulty. You'll have to make a new one.

But the one I had was made in NM, and I gave it to a normal mule. Also, it
is this same staff which I cannot put back into her possession. Very weird.

Correct. The staff she dropped, which she cannot pick up again, is the very
staff she made to complete that quest in NM. She dropped the staff in a
Normal game.
