Once upon a time you had to finish normal with an SC char before being
allowed to play HC. Now you can just play HC; They removed that
requirement with 1.10.

Are you sure? Because I recently started on the realms in 1.11
Expansion and could not create a HC character. Last week I finished
single player normal and noticed I can now create a single player hc
character, but I would rather create a realm hc character. As I said, I
havent checked on realms since I finished single player but before I
could nto create HC, only expansion and/or ladder.

I'm quite sure. I created a HC char after 1.11 came out with an account
that initially had zero chars in it.

I'm pretty sure you have to beat SC on realms. But I think it's only normal
you have to beat, so no biggy

Pre 1.10 you had to beat Normal SC with each account to be able to create a
HC character on that account. With 1.10 you only had to beat Normal SC once
for each computer. There is some sort of registry check or something now.
Alternately, you could get someone to send you a SP HC character that would
enable HC for you, or they could create a HC account for you. But since you
have beaten Normal SC yourself, you should be good to go for HC.

I don't know about SP, but on the realms it is enough if you either beat
normal difficulty with one character in one account, or you just access a HC
character of somebody else's account. Alternatively you could change (or
add) this registry value:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\Diablo II
AllowHardcore reg_dword 0x00000001

Now try it from a computer on which no SC char has ever killed baal in
normal (IE a new install of Diablo on a machine that never had Diablo
installed before) and you'll NOT be able to create HC characters.
There's some bit/flag in the Registry...
Windows... the most widely propagated virus in the history of
electronics...

Yep, it worked last night, but the only thing that changed this time
was that i had previously beat the game in Normal. I suppose you have
to beat it either on Realms or in SP to unlock HC for either. Make
sense, because that way you know the game and what to expect.
I tried an amazon last night for a HC character but didn't like it
much. I will probably create another character, maybe a druid, since
never played with one.

Bad mistake. For HC, you should really play characters that you are
intimately familiar with, unless you don't mind learning by dying.

Lol, I guess I could deal with a death. I played my sorc in nightmare
on SP and she's a Lvl 43. I killed one of the unique monsters and it
unleashed a nova type attack that killed me instantly.
I was like, DANG! if that would have been an HC character! Lol.

I've learned more about this game in the 6 months that I've been
playing HC, than in the 3 years prior (when I played SC). Believe me,
once you get into the HC mentality, you NEVER fail to notice things
like Fire Enchanted or Cold Enchanted.

What do you think is the strongest HC character to make it a long ways?
I don't want to make another sorc and I tried an Amazon and didn't like
it too much. I like the Paladin but I heard he ain't doing so well in
the later levels. Any suggestions for a build?

EVERY character class can make it through hell, solo; However, the BEST
one is whichever class you enjoy most and are best at. Personally, I
like barbarians and assassins. You should probably stick to what you
know best though, for your initial foray into HC. Having said that, you
can always go the skellimancer route...

I guess I'll go with a barb then. I already played one for a while on
SC Realm and kinda like the Axes. One-handed axe, shield type barb a
good idea? I never played one past Lvl 15 or so.

Easiest barb to play, but requires lots of patience:
20 Mastery
1 Iron Skin
1 Natural Resists (maybe 2-3 more, if you need resists in hell)
20 Concentrate
1 Berserk
1 Whirlwind (useful for maneuvering, and for killing maggots etc..)
1 (all prereqs)
20 Battle Orders (Concentrate synergy)
1 all other war cries (with possible exception of War Cry)
Keep block > 50%
Max resists.
Use Howl, Taunt, and Grim Ward for crowd control.
Use Leap Attack, and Whirlwind for maneuvering.
Use Battle Cry to reduce enemy effectiveness.
Use Battle Command, Battle Orders and Shout prior to battle.
Use Berserk against PI and IM.
You might also want to put a few points in Throw Mastery and keep some
javalins on weapon switch, to deal with the especially nasty bosses
(this will be a slow kill though).
Just enough str and dex to use your items and keep blocking at a good
percentage. Rest in vit. Unused skill points can go into synergies, or
perhaps Battle Cry. (I love that skill/curse!)
Get as much life leech as possible. 3% mana leech is enough. Crushing
blow (try Blood crafted gloves) is a must.
