In the first weeks of playing after 1.11 release, i never experienced
any freezing situations. But since 4 or 5 days, the situation has
changed in a drastic way...
The freezing periods seems to occur at more or less every 8 seconds of
fluid movements(as mentioned in Patrick's thread "8-second periodic
"sludge" in DiabloII since 1.11" ), but they are lasting between 5 and
20 seconds !
And they are happenning everywhere in the game (not just in trading or
inventory windows). It is happenning walking in town or in any battle
field...
At the same time, i can observe strong movements in the fps
rate.Instead of staying close to 85 as usual, they could go down as low
as 5 or 8 for short moments and move anywhere from that level to the
normal one. On the other hand, the ping is almost stable between 80 and
150.
I usually play with 2 computers and the strange thing is that the other
one is still having a stable fps rate at 85 and that he does not
freeze!
The main difference between the two computers is that on the one that
is stable, i play with diablo's CD in the CD-Rom while the other comp
has the game mounted with Daemon tool's. I tried to unmount the cd and
play with the physical one, but the situation did not change.
But still, the weird part is that the problems appeared just few days
ago!
Is it possible that Blizzard is downloading micro-patches without
warnings ?
And, AFAIK, using Daemon Tool's is not illegal..or am i wrong?
Of course, i dont use any hacks and was never banned.

I have noticed similar behavior, but am beginning to think it's being caused
by some kind of dupe-checking/hack-checking code occuring within the 1.11
code itself running on the client computer, not on the server. I have
noticed very little hesistation/"sludging" when not in an inventory window,
except when playing in a public game, and then it seems to be occuring
everywhere. My suspicion is that when someone else in the game access their
inventory, the slowdown occurs for everyone else in the game. Since I play
alone mostly, I don't see the slowdown except when I access the inventory
screen.
However, as I write this, it occurs to me that if it REALLY is occuring on
the client end (my machine), then it really shouldn't happen when someone
ELSE in a public game accesses their inventory.
But something is going on, for sure...and I haven't seen any posts about it
on the Battle.net site from anyone else, only in this newsgroup.

Thanks for you answer Doodles,
Are you playing with virtual CD mounted or with the physical one into
the physical CD-Driver?
As you said, it really seems to be a private issue(your own damn PC).
Very strange...

I've been having numerous freezups, it seems as if it has become worse
in the last week or so. It's almost so bad I won't even play, since
it's HC. Tonight I thought I lost a new barb mule by wandering into
the cow level and seeing cows, so I cast a portal right away and went to
step through it with the cows coming at me. All the while knowing that
one whack is gonna give me the "Your deeds will be remembered" screen.
But the game freezes right as I click on the portal and then there's
that super long interval before I find out if I'm dead or lucky.

I play with the disk in the drive and I have the exact same thing
happening. Everything slows down, or freezes, just like you say, and my
FPS rate also goes down to a very low number, but the ping is stable.
My char can't move, or do anything really. After it goes away,
everything goes into hyperspeed for a few moments.
What's scary is that once it passes my merc is usually standing beside
me and there are number of dead monsters on the ground, indicating that
play has continued while I've been frozen.
I solo 98% of the time, and this happens when I'm alone in a game, and
also if I'm playing with someone. Frustrating.

Hi there,
> I play with the disk in the drive and I have the exact same thing

I have 2 computers, both playing with its own copy of legit CD in drive,
and I don't have any problems whatsoever except when my damn screensaver
launches in the middle of a game : I play in window mode. Now this did not
happen previous 1.11 and I don't see why my screensaver should launch when
I am playing. My guess is that Blizz are doing weird event queues hook-ups
that sort of bypass some of windows controls.
Has anyone these kind of problems on a macintosh ??

I use a CD image that I made so I am not subject to random disk seeks
killing my hardcore characters. I suppose it's possible that the behavior
is somehow associated with that program (Virtual DAEMON Manager with
BlindWrite), but frankly I doubt it. It would make more sense for Blizzard
to simply make their program impossible to use with CD images.

Hi Jill, nice talking to you again! (by the way, my HC necro that you
equiped with your Trang's set donation is still alive at clvl 80 or
so..)
I understood that you are playing Diablo with the disc in the drive,
but do you have Daemon tools install on your PC for other purposes?
The only solution i came with, for that freezing problem, was to
uninstall D2 and Daemon tool and re-install D2 with Cd in drive...
Your post is making that solution obsolete..

Hi Louis,
I'm so glad. :-) I always wanted to know how that turned out, and was
considering either posting a message or e-mailing you, but was kinda
afraid in case your necro had met with, er, unfortunate circumstances.
I'd always hoped you would volunteer the information, which you just
did. Did he make Guardian?

I don't have Daemon tools installed on my computer at all. Not being a
computer person, I'm totally lost when everyone talks about this
program, or Alcohol, or whatever.

He is not Guardian yet (looking at ground, avoiding eye contact and
trying to find good excuses..)
He was always teamed with my girlfriend's Bowazone until she tripped at
NM Ancients... So Necrofungus (that's his name) did a bit of Hell, but
decided to wait for the reconstruction of the second zone before going
further..(looting security).
Then patch 1.11 and Uber Tristram frenesie... in SC.
