I'd like to upgrade my niece's computer with a DVD-ROM for Christmas but the computer is only an OEM Celeron 667 system with onboard Intel 810e graphics. Will DVDs play smoothly on such a system?

I'd add a DVD decoder card, but yes, it should be fine without one.

Thanks for the reply.

I hope you are right. I won't know for sure for a while, when I have the Celeron system in my hands, but I already ordered a DVD-ROM, Artec (rebadged Sony 16x). It's supposed to be very quiet and I think you said your friend's Sony was quiet as well.

I would have ordered a Lite-on but I heard they are really noisy even at 1X playback.

As far as I know my niece only needs decent CD-ROM speed (Artec is 48X) and DVD playback. DAE isn't an issue.
