Dunno if this was already asked here... but I got the idea yesterday.
What was you biggest surprise from opening a simple chest? I wonder if it's
possible to find a ZOD or only from a monster drop like last Baal? Maybe it
was a unique you thought you would never find?

In NM I had a chest in the Durance lv 2 pop out a Kuko. Not an amazing find
by any stretch, but this was pretty early in my online period, and I didn't
have any MF characters yet (much less any idea how to go about building
one). I still didn't even know which one was best for MF'ing, so to find a
Kuko on my own was pretty exciting, especially considering that all the
other decent gear I ever had was given to me by the wonderful people I
played with on USWest!
I still remember how my eyes bugged out when I say "Cedar Bow" in gold.

Mine was that Ali Baba right before the doorway to Mephisto's lair.

Ever? Probably the first time I ever had a Stormshield pop from one--well,
actually it popped out from under a rock, but I suppose it's all the same.
I say *first* time because I've had two more since--from chests, that is,
hehe. Understand that I've been playing this game a long time . . . way too
long.

A Shako, popped out of a chest in the Ancient Tunnels in Hell. Sweet.

Two things:
1) A perfect Mara's from some chest or rat pile in the Hell Ancient
Tunnels.
2) An SoJ from a bone chest in Hell River of Flame, the only SoJ I've
ever found.
In 1.11 my Barb had a Greyform pop out of a chest in the NM Sewers. Not
that that's an elite unique, but I can't remember finding that armor
before. Sadly, like everything else he's finding, it comes about 50
levels too late.

Chest in an ice cave once tossed out two pieces of the IK set, I
thought that was really weird. Best item was probably eth Skullder's
from a chest on Mephy's level of the Durance of Hate.

Best item a chest ever dropped for me was Twitchthroe, rigid leather
armor. Now, before you say "Twitch!?!", let me explain. I was building
a HC conc barb, and I was intentionally NOT pumping dex. My goal was to
use Twitch and Swordguard (neither of which I had, mind you) to enhance
my block %, and save those valuable stat points for vit. It was normal,
I had just killed the Council and had descended into the Durance. The
VERY FIRST chest I popped gave me gold rigid leather, AND it was my
chars first unique item.
Unfortunately the ladder season (this was season 1) reset about two
days later, so I never did get this guy past act 1 nightmare.

Was that back on East SC? You gave me two accts back when I was first
playing, and an eth skullders that was in there has been worn by my lead
assassin ever since. That was the BF assassin that took out the clone for my
only anni.

I got a Tal's amy from a barrel in Andarial's room in NM mode. I did not
know you could get that in early NM mode.

Hell, you can get Tal's ammy from the council members in Travincal in
Normal difficulty, or from that boss that's always at the entrance to
Lower Kurast from the Flayer Jungle.

A Vex rune from the first chest I encountered when running from the Outer
Cloister Waypoint back to the entrance to The Pit, in Hell of course.
I couldn't believe my eyes! Happened early in the previous (2nd) Ladder.

Didn't know that. The problem with finding nice items from chests/barrels,
is that I am stuck obsessively opening them in those locations until I stop
playing. Now I always pop every barrel in Andarial's room in all
difficulties, and in a couple other locations I have been surprised by nice
chest drops.

I actually got a Tal's amy from normal Meph last ladder season, running a
brand-new Skellimancer with just about 0% mf. Many people refused to
believe it, but it's true. And it's the ONLY Tal's amy I have ever found
personally.

One of the easiest way to gather a Gull is to do Normal Andy runs.

Well, the only reason I knew is because I was about 7 when that movie
came out, so obviously I didn't see it until years later, by which
point I knew what it was about.
I'm glad I knew - that way I could leave. I can't watch that scene at
all.

I can't. I remember talking with some co-workers a few years ago. They
were saying that anyone who didn't see the ending of "The Sixth Sense"
coming was an idiot. I, who never saw the ending coming at all, said
nothing. Guess I'm an idiot. :-)

I never got the chance to see it coming because some jackass reviewer
thinking himself clever had compared the film to "Jacob's Ladder," which
spoiled the whole thing for me. Giving away the plot twist by reference is
the same thing as giving it away by value. I was permanently scarred by
this, and have been in thrice-weekly psychotherapy for it ever since.
