unable to sign in with windows messenger ? Solution!

This worked for me:

Shutdown Messenger
Open IE, Select Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings
Clear all checkboxes
Start Messenger and sign in

Yes, if you're setup to use some sort of proxy, Messenger will actually attempt to make use
of this; so by turning this off, you may solve the problem.
