In Uber Tristram, the consensus is that, killing Meph first, will
"open" possible srategies that would not be available otherwise.
I have been there two times...and i am planning my third trip now...
What would be the best way to challenge Mephisto in first? ...it seems
that the Wrist's area is a good place.. (met him there the first
time..and EuropeHC as well IIRC)

Please ignore anything you already know.
I normally race to the far right until I hit the wall. Don't pause to get a
BO, do that before you enter the red Tristram portal, then again when you're
at the wall at the far right of the screen.
Then I follow the wall south (downscreen) until I hit the river. As you
creep - not race along the river's edge Meph's minions will start popping up
around you. Stop there to clear the minions and Meph should be very close by
if not on top of you by now.
That has worked 11/14 times so far. The other times I managed to get all 3
Ubers at once. If that happens, obviously you'll want to run a bit to get
them alone (if you can't tank all 3 at the same time).
Taking them on at the river's edge has the advantage of protecting your
back - and if you do manage to get just one Uber, you'll stand a better
chance of being able to fight your way clear (or simply run) if things go
badly.
After Meph is gone, I normally clear any remaining skellies then walk into
the middle of town and take out Baal and Diablo. But I imagine circling the
town from the river's edge might work if you want to try Baal and Diablo
one-on-one.

Hey Louis!
I like Robert's explanation ,except that I saw screen shots of the
battle and it loked to me as if the river was up top and not along the
southern area. I'd really like to have this clarified before I join you
there.
My kid is only on the inhaler twice a day now so the tension is not as
bad and this puts more free time my way.
Perhaps this weekend, you said the 18th, might be good. I am east cost
EST just like you. But after supper would probably be a better time.
And I might be able to get my wife to watch and stir some excitement in
her towards trying it with my chars.

Hi Orion,
I agree, we should clarified the difference between Robert's
affirmation and the screen shots you saw. My first encounter with Meph
was close to Wrist's location.
But it is not very relevant; I dont remember where he was
triggered...he was really after us, and we were dying so damn fast (and
often...i thought using Salvation only after 3 or 4 deaths...) that he
may have followed us from the Robert's initial location to the upper
river... Maybe the screen shots are reflecting a similar movement from
Meph...and, maybe not!
Sunday the 18 is still good for us. Evening is good as well! (i was
suggesting late afternoon to avoid heavy internet traffic that may slow
the game). If you wife want to use the Amazone, the offer is still
there...

Thanks a lot Robert for your infos!
One question: When you say that 11 times on 14 times, Meph was located
in the south-east region of the Tristram's map, you really mean that
you were there 14 times and that he was there 11 times?
(i know that those are your exact words and i dont want to seem
incredule...i just want to make sure that it was not a kind of "sort of
speaking" statistic..)
I will keep your good advices in mind!

My first time in UTrist we got Meph out by himself at first by circling
around to the south end of town. He came out past where Peppin used to
stand in Diablo1. I think Diablo starts between Ogdens tavern door and
the fountain. Baal I think is about where Cain is kept imprisoned.

Hey Ashen,
I never played Diablo1.. so, never had the chance to meet that Peppin!
But, if i understand you well, Robert's indications for Mephisto's
locations are right; out from the portal, you turn right and go to the
south river...Robert is pointing at the south-east corner of the map
.... sounds ok with your souvenirs?

Maybe. The D2 maps really need a compass on it, rather than having
people make up their own directions. I'd more likely call it south
west. Straight down as the monitor displays anyway.
If you circle around well back from the centre of the town to around
where Griswold is in normal tristram, that would probably put you
closer to Meph than either of the other ubers.

Yes, I've tried this method in 14 Tristram games*. And in those 14 attempts,
11 of them were successful in drawing Mephisto out first by himself.
I don't know exactly where Meph starts out on the map, just that he's
usually the first to respond to trespassers in the south-east area of the
town.

Didn't quite finish this before I sent it ....
The '*' was to note that those 14 games were just the ones where I have
tried this method. I've done a few other Trist runs, but they were quite a
mess due to the inexperience of the people that went into the portal first
or were group games I joined that were already in progress.
No run was more of a mess than my first attempt. I tried it solo, but after
a few attempts each with a handful of characters I went public with it. I
had my friends spam the channels looking for help. That was in the first
week of the new patch when most people hadn't seen a Trist game yet. Let's
just say we did badly. But 7 hours after spawning the red portal I got my
first torch. A pally torch at that - so I was happy.

The red portal from the Cain quest is in the South-East in my mind. It sits
near the water's edge in the bottom right corner of town on my screen.
This is the same for everyone, isn't it ? (this is a sincere question).
And as to the water - it borders the town on the top and bottom (I just
checked a regular Trist to be sure).
If it would be of any help - we could meet up in a game and I could walk you
through what I do in my torch runs. I play in sc ladder and sc nl on US
East, but I'd be happy to make a temporary character if you're in a
different area.

I see from your other thread "Ping: My Buddy Misfit" - you're planning on
using your mercs.
Your party seems very, very well equipped so I can't imagine you'll have
much trouble, but the mercs may wander close enough to the town centre to
attract all 3 Ubers. If you can get by without them I'd leave them dead.
My mercs never lasted long enough to be of any help so I don't bother
bringing them now.
