I recently installed diablo 2 (full install) with no corrupted files.
Then I got no music at all. I got sound fx but not music. Then I bought
the expansion (hoping it will fix the problem) and installed it. The
music runs in the title screen and in ACT V but not anywhere else.
HELP! I've been researching for a solution on this for about a week but
I found nothing. Please help.

Ok this may seem simplistic but it also might be something you have
overlooked. Have you (or someone else) turned the music down? Hit esc goto
options and sound. There are two sliders one for sound effects and one for
music. If the music slider is all the way to the left then its just been
turned down. Outside of the game like in a chat channel CTRL+M turns the
music off and on. I don't see a real problem if you can't get the music
going. Everything else is working prolly yes? Personally I have the music
off. Considering the amount of playing I do I don't need that running in my
head 24/7 LOL. HTH

Of course I turned the sliders all the way to the right. As I've said,
the only music I'm getting is on the Title screen and in Act V.

Ahh, easy solution then. You didn't copy the D2music.mpq across from
the D2 original disks. The original install program doesn't do it
itself, though if you ask the LoD install program to do a complete
install it will ask for those disks. So just find the Play disc I
think it is, and copy the D2music.mpq across to your D2 folder on your
hard drive manually.

Well if you install the LOD, it will automatically copy the d2music.mpq
in the Diablo II directory so I think that's not the solution because
d2music.mpq is already in my hard drive.

Are you sure it's D2Music.mpq and not d2xmusic.mpq? Well, from what
you've said so far, I'd suggest copying the D2music.mpq across again.
The copy on your hard drive could have gotten corrupted somehow.

I've tried that a lot. I've installed/uninstalled Diablo II atleast 5
times over and over. Copying this and that. Having the Single,
Multiplayer, and Full Install but still NO MUSIC JUST FOR ACT I-IV
(Title Screen and Act V does have music)!!! And here's what i noticed,
When I'm running Diablo II and I'm still in the Title Screen, I toggle
into my REGISTRY and the 'Music Volume' VALUE is 64 (or the maximum)
but when GAME TIME and I switch again and REFRESH my REGISTRY, the
VALUE becomes 0. What the hell is wrong???

Maybe it is broken? Try to copy it over, again.

huh? Is your CDrom bad? Its size should be 340,286 MB (at least this is
the size of German version).

I don't know. My size is 329 MB (345,349,632 bytes). I searched
BearShare for d2music.mpq and most results are the same size as mine.

What sound card do you have, and have you tried installing latest
drivers, or reinstalling current drivers?

And, (boy, I really hate to do this...) what version of DirectX you
got? (ducks and runs for cover!)

My sound card is C-Media and I have DirectX 9.0c but I don't think
that's the problem. As I've said over and over again, TITLE SCREEN HAS
MUSIC, ACT V HAS MUSIC. ACT I-IV HAS NOTHING. I NEED HELP!!!

Enrico we have tried to help. Have you emailed Blizz and asked them or
checked the support site? Again as I said the music isn't necessary. On the
otherhand the sound effects are handy but you have those. Good Luck and let
us know if you do find a solution in case someone else has this problem.

And sometimes problems with drivers can cause weird issues, kinda like
what you are experiencing.

Good luck.

If it's any consolation, you're not really missing that much, anyway IMO.
The ingame music is distracting to me, and it's literally been years since
I've played the game with it on.

Unless the issue is pointing to general issues with your machine somehow, I
wouldn't worry about it that much.

It's a close call, considering what I know of both Bliz and of your
situation . . . but in this case I'd have to give Bliz the benefit of the
doubt and guess that somewhere, somehow, it's you with something amiss
rather than them.

BearShare? Is your specimen legit?

You say, you have a C-Media card, but not, which one. There are
literally dozens of "C" sound chips (made by Cirrus, if I understand
correctly, and we need the model number, too, to know which driver is
required. The diagnosis software Everest might help.

Also, old mainboards with the VIA southbridge, model number ending in
686 or 686a have a tendency to "break" data, when it is transferred
over the second IDE channel, which is often from cdrom. Check if you
have such a mainboard.

Otherwise, I have no idea.

I'm beginning to strongly suspect he's playing from some kind of warez
version that has had unnecessary game components such as certain sound/vid
files stripped from it.

I'm not using warez, infact I hate warez. They always have incomplete
data like cinematics, speeches, etc. I always buy the retail version.

I don't think so.
What i do suspect is a failing hard drive.
If I were you I'd start back upping all inportant data and do a thorough
check disk. It might very well turn up some bad sectors.
If that's not the case something else could be amiss, with the hardware.
I've seen weird cases of motherboard/memory failures which lead to
similar problems.
Time to do a thorough harware check!
And also do a swipe with a recently updated virus scanner just to make
sure that doesn't interfere.
Good luck!

Well people I got the same exactly problem, the music play in the start and in the V act, I don't think is a "motherboard/memory failure" or will just get the set with a "updated virus scanner " it must be something from the game, this happnes after I installed a XP version on a pc, with the same cds, the same HD so i don't think it's a hardware problem...and if you find how to make the music work mail-me hehehe, noting personal but I'm getting mad because of this too...

Reply to felmarg

Wow so many complex answers...

try this go to your options and move that slider all the way to the right. If that doesn't work go to your battle.net chat screen and Ctrl+M ( make sure your volume up) then you should be able to hear the music playing in the chat room and it should play music in your game.

Reply to SeafoodPho

well the problem is, the music plays, but only in the title screem and the V act, and the starting cinematic of the logo of the Blizzard don't show up too.

I can answer your question with no problem since I went through this back in 2001. Trust me, you aren't alone and this was a big issue back then. You wont be happy with the response though.

The original version, off the shelf 2000 vs 1.0, installed all these major files in full install mode:

d2sfx.msq
d2speech.msq
d2video.msq
d2char.msq

The one file it didnt install was d2music.msq. So when people respond saying "it was in the full install anyway", they were playing a later version after yours (and mine) was. The very first original depended solely on the music playing from the cds.

Ok, simple enough. The problem is with these early cds, the file D2MUSIC.MSQ is right there on the "Play Disc". It is 329 MB. If you try and copy it directly (as Blizzard says) directly to your Diablo2 folder, about halfway through, you will receive the message: "cyclical redundancy check". If you try and do anything with it, about halfway through, the cd just revs down and quits. I have heard of 1 guy who actually was able to burn just that file, but when I try it still kapoots halfway through.

Back in the day Blizzard refused to support it and they still do. They already know about this. 329 MB is still too big for them to distribute and they wont. They will tell you spend the money and buy a later version of Diablo 2 original.

As for the copy from the Expansion CD, the file d2xmusic.msq is just what the x means. Expansion. That file upgrades the original music file by adding Chapter 5 (55,000 kbs or so). That is why when you just add that file you get music only in the 5th. You have no original file to build on (1-4).

I say play without the music. You wont miss it. If you have to have it, get a friend to email you with the D2MUSIC file if he can. Its not worth it though
