Windows XP and refresh rate problem

I have Windows XP, GeForce 4 ti4200 and Detonators 40.71.
I have set the video adapter's Direct3D's preferences to a refresh rate of 85Mhz. The questions are the following:

1. Do I have to install RefreshForce V1.10 in order to play fullscreen games at 85MHz?

2. Does Samsung SyncMaster 753DF support 100Mhz?

3. Does Medal of Honour have a "Vertical Sync" option? When I play it, frames aren't smooth. Is this because the monitor is at 60MHz?

Thank you.

The detonator 40.72's also allow you to select your refresh rate. Instal those they're WHQL certified and availible from Nvidia.

2. Does Samsung SyncMaster 753DF support 100Mhz?
Yes, but only at resolutions no higher than 848x480x32 or 800x600x32. Install the latest Samsung monitor driver, and with the "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" box checked, under the Control Panel\Settings\Advanced\Monitor tab, you'll be able to see exactly what the monitor can and cannot support. This can be found under the Adapter tab\List all modes button.

I'd suggest 1024x768x32@85Hz for the best results with this monitor. And as mentioned, with the 40.72 driver and SP1, you won't need to install a refresh rate fix as was previously needed each time a new driver was applied to the system ... this was corrected in the Service Pack. I'd also suggest entering 85 in the DXDIAG.EXE (DirectX Diagnostic Tool) More Help\Overrride tab as the override value.

If I set 1024x768x100Mhz, will I damage my monitor?
I've read that the monitor will "downgrade" to the best refresh possible automatically, thus avoiding any damage.
Right?

Yes, that's correct ... the monitor will "refuse" to display a resolution and refresh rate that is not supported. But that's not the correct method for choosing the best refresh rate for a particular resolution ... this is a safety feature, and not something that all monitors support.

If you were able to force the monitor to run at 1024x768@100Hz (such as with a third party utility), yes, the monitor would probably be damaged. I've seen this happen before with other monitors, and the screen actually appears to "melt" right before your eyes. It's not pretty.

I'd suggest adjusting the monitor display to be 1024x768x32@85, and let it go at that. If you want a higher refresh rate at that resolution, then you'll be looking at purchasing a monitor that is larger than 17", IMHO.

If you are thinking that you'll get better frame rates in games with a 100Hz refresh rate (and this is why you'd like the display to be 100Hz at 1024x768), try disabling vertical sync under the Direct3D and OpenGL settings, so that the frames rates are not restricted to the monitor refresh rate.
