I think those were nuclear submarines. They only require uranium.
Ordinary submarines require oil.
Destroyers can see them, yes, so can other submarines and AEGIS.
I kind of neglected my submarine fleet... until in one archipelago
game I've got only uranium. I had no choice other than to base my
naval power on nuclear submarines (each carrying a tactical nuke).
Fortunately two AI nations staged a war over a small one-city island.
And eventually destroyed that city. Free land, rich with natural
resources (oil & iron)! My settler and 3 TOW infantry jumped onboard
my galleon and set sail (or did they raw?) to that rich island,
painfully slowly. Escorted by half-dozen nuclear submarines
prepared to nuke any enemy ship. They made it.
