My uncle's computer is weird. Before I begin, I think he may have got hacked. First, all the setting in the router was out of wack. I changed those settings and then was able to use the Internet. I can use Netscape fine, but IE won't work. When I click to open it, it says that IE has encountered an error and needs to close. I then figured that the IE files must have been corrupted. I downloaded and installed Service Pack 1 for XP Home. The installation went fine, but it still does not work. I then deleted all the files in C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer. I then downloaded the web install for IE. Now, when I click on the install, it tells me that a newer version of IE has been detected and setup needs to close. Is there a way to get IE to start working again? Sorry for all the writing.

I don't know if this will help you.. but IE SUCKS in my opinion, alot of people like Mozilla i don't like that either cause its like Netscape and i think netscape blows too........ I think Opera is by far the best i've used to far, Fast, Jam packed with Awesome features, the multiple Tabing websites is my favorite, it has awesome Themes... its just a solid performing application..

You might want to Reload Windows and get a fresh copy of Internet explorer on there, and also give him a good Virus Program....... i like Panda Platinum 7, i think its the best........

Personally, I prefer Firebird. The bad thing is, you have to have IE to access certain web sites. Like windows update. At least, that's the problem I've had. If I use a differebt browser to get updates, it wants me to download the latest version of IE. Instead of reinstalling windows, I would just try to reinstall IE first, and see if that helps.

Also, if you don't already have a firewall of some kind, you might want to get one. I use <A HREF="http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_download.html" target="_new">Kerio Personal Firewall</A> wich is free.

Like I said, it's a problem that I've had. After I posted previously, I tried to go to windows update to see if it would work. This is what I got:

Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer.

You need to be running a version of Internet Explorer 5 or higher in order to use Windows Update.

Download the latest version of Internet Explorer

Once Internet Explorer is installed, you can go to the Windows Update site by typing http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com into the address bar of Internet Explorer.

If you prefer to use a different Web browser, updates to Windows may be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center.

So you like mozilla? I like opera....... Mozilla is very simpliar to IE in searching interface........ Opera has these Tabs on top you can have like multiple sites opened at ones it comes in so handy you can just leave them opened and go back to them when you want it works awesome.

I'm running <A HREF="http://texturizer.net/firebird/download.html" target="_new"> Mozilla Firebird 0.7</A> - has tabbed browsing and is faster than IE. Don't know where you get Mozilla doesn't have tabs ...

Davemar,
While all these yahoo's are talkin about something that won't get your IE fixed let's see if we can reason this out (btw Mozilla is a great browser. I like the firebird varient.) Anyway, I guess we can assume that becuz netscape works then it's most likely a repair issue. Can you get the exact error message IE gave you? You should be able to run a search on their site if you can get the code. BTW did you delete any registry data when you uninstalled? Go to this site (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;318378&Product=ie600) for more info. Let us know if that helps.

I forgot, to get the exact error message IE gave you go to the event viewer in xp. start>control panel> administrative services> event viewer. There's a break dow of the diferent types of events you can see so you prolly want to look for something related to aplications (sorry, I'm not in front of my machine right now so I can't direct you any further).

Well, like I said its my uncle's computer, so I am unable to be in front of it right now. I remember the error was a .dll error, but I am unable to tell you the filename. I should have wrote it down. I am going over there this weekend, so I will check it out. He does NOT have an antivirus program, so he may have a virus. A guess a virus could be causing the problem. Once I find out the filename, I will get back to you.

Reply to davemar14

If it's just a dll issue you might just be able to download it from the microsoft site. At this point we probably don't want to assume that your uncle has a virus. If he has XP you can get the error form the event viewer and cross reference it on the IE site. In the mean time, he really ought to get a virus scanner or at least enable his firewall. Post back when you have the error code and we'll go from there.

Ok, I went over to my uncle's house today and ran Norton Antivirus, and it found 6 trojans. I deleted the files and then used a registry tweak and changed a value in Internet Explorer from 1 to 0. This would allow me to reinstall IE. I then downloaded the IE setup, and it started to intall. Then it says that IE setup is no longer able to continue and needs to close. I also found out that the .dll file is the winshow.dll. Would replacing this file in the system folder fix it?
