I know there have in the past been one or two posters with an interest in
the Double Your Pleasure mod, and I just wanted to let them know that we
have finally pulled our act together and released the Rise and Rule
mod.:-)

Quoting our short news-blurb:
---
The Rise and Rule mod (RAR) is based on our experiences with the Double
Your Pleasure mod for Civilization III and the expansion pack Play The
World.

Rise and Rule is only released for the latest (and last) Civ3 expansion
pack Conquests. The simple design philosophy behind the mod is that
variety is the spice of life and an essential part of strategy. If
there's only one path to success, there really isn't much strategy
involved.

We've tried to beef up the selection of improvements, wonders, units
etc., hoping to give you more to choose between. Don't think you'll be
able to build everything everywhere. We have tried hard to make that
option the certain road to failure. A wise ruler will weigh cost vs.
benefit in every single decision made.

The nitty-gritty cold facts

200 techs
13 governments
100 Improvements
67 Great Wonders
36 Small Wonders
14 Specialist Citizen types
52 Resources
340 Units (including flavor units)
lots of changes and improvements over the Double Your Pleasure mod.

The mod is downloadable through http://civ3.bernskov.com website.

I have played and enjoyed your mods for years, Isak. Congratulations on
your new release.

I doubt I'll be able to play this one, though. The download is immense, and
I cannot get better than a 28.8 dial-up connection.

Any other possible form of distribution?

Thanks,

I'm afraid there currently isn't any other form of distribution available
to us. I'd love to burn it on a cd and send it, but I'm afraid that would
soon take it's toll on my time and purse. :(

I'll let you know if i hear of it appearing on gamemag cds or similar.
The DYP mod did end up on a few of those, so it's not entirely unlikely,
but too soon to say for certain of course. Gamemag cd editors may think
that Civ has lost a bit of it's novelty value by now - the poor misguided
souls :)

If you don't know anybody with cable and a CD burner you could try a
program like GetRight. I think it can redial and pick back up where
you left off in the download. That means you could run it while at
work or whatever. There is likely a trial version available at any
of the software download sites. That way you can run it while at work.
That is assuming you have unlimitted connection time and you can tie
up the phone for that long.

I haven't downwloaded it yet but I am curious what you used to package
it with. Is it possible to compress the files? Is your installer
adding the extra bulk? Looking at a previous version it seems the
art/units is the bulk of the size. I suspect you are probably doing
all you can to keep the size down but I figured I would ask.

I have cable so it won't be a problem for me. But I remember how big
20-30 meg used to seem on dial-up.

This is fantastic can't wait to play. One snafu though: To run RAR, I
need c3c v. 1.22, and I never downloaded that patch. When I go to
civ3.com's website to download it, the link
(http://www.firaxis.com/downloads_detail.cfm?file_id=74) is broken.
Anywhere else I can get c3c 1.22, so that I can run RAR?? Thanks!

There is a list of patches at www.civfanatics.com
Perhaps what you are looking for is there.

I see you have the links. Google this group when you get it
installed. There are a couple of fixes you need to make.

I play it and like it much better than the vanilla c3c.

There's a RAR patch out in the past weeks that fix (I think) all the
unit issues we've discussed here.
