Reinstall of Civ 3, PTW & DYP, Issues?

I'm just getting around to installing the above after a clean install of
W98se and being away from Civ for a while (missed it) and wondered if there
are any issues I should be aware of. So:

Having now got a fast connection and so able to play on-line, do I need to
install Game Spy for on-line play?

I see that PTW patch 1.27f has not been updates, but, DYP is now at 2.02x
which I'm downloading now. Has anything vital been updated? Do I still
need to hack the ini file to remove the dot after abbreviated month names so
that Windows doesn't think the extension comes after the dot? Any other
issues I should be aware of?
