Hi

This is probably quite an old question with no simple answers, but I'm just looking for reccomendations really. I'm upgrading my PC by parts, and its now time for the gfx (Athlon XP 1600+/256meg DDR with 16meg PCI Vanta is amuisng...)

Anyway I was woundering which video card would provide the best TV Out playback? I want to play Divx etc through my tv and get decent quality - any suggestions? My price braket is between £50 or £100. What sort of things should I look for - Ram, GF3/4/Ti, Radeons?

Many Thanks

Richard

i dont know how nvidia cards have been lately, i have only had expierience with two video out cards. one was a voodoo3. tv out on that was absolute crap. the other is the radeon 7200, the quality on that one is VERY exeptional. i can only imagine that all ati cards have similar tvout performance.

my computer is so fast, it completes an endless loop in less than 4 seconds!

Any Radeon AIW you get will have far superior video output quality to a GF3/4's video output. If this is the most important to you, you should get a Radeon.

Do Radeons all have S Video? Would this card have good TV-Out and be okish(ie better than my TNT Vanta 16meg PCi) for games such as NFS-HP2?

Radeon 7500 128Bit AGP 128Mb DDR DVI+TV-Out

Thanks for all your help!

I would recommend a Radeon 8500 or its newer but very slightly slower brother a 9000. As far as I know all them should have some form of TV Out but I may very easily be wrong there. But anyway I recommand an 8500 (NON LE) or a 9000 or 9000 Pro. Oh and if you must get the 7500 then yes it will still be better than the TNT2. But again I strongly recommend a 8500 or a 9000 Pro or Non-Pro for a tight budget.
Hope this helps

I honestly dont know. I personaly just use a gigabyte R9000 Radeon 9000 NON-Pro. It serves me fine. And it has S-Video out with an adapter for normal RCA and also a nice software bundle. But thats just my experiance. Also the R9000 Pro is a good gigabyte model too. But other than that I cant offer any advice on what brand.
Sorry bout that.

I use ATI AIW 8500 128 to view dvx from my computer to sony wega 32 inch. I use a 25 foot svideo cable. Quality is excellent but is dependent on your dvx quality.

I would recommend an All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500 for you. The AIW series has the best mix of video-in and video-out, and decent 3D gaming to round it all off.

The All-In-Winder 7500 may also be a good buy, but it's 3D performance in games is not as good as the 8500 (but is still miles better than your old TNT2).

The regular (non All-In-Wonder) 8500 is okay as well, but it only has tv-out, not tv-in.

All of the above have s-video.

As for brand names, ATI, Herculese and Power Color are all good. I would be careful about buying from other companies, as they are trying to sell to a more value oriented customer and some may have disabled/not included the s-video adapter (Saphire is famous for this).

Any RADEON with TVO should do. That includes some of the EARLIEST versions, like the Radeon 64MB ViVo, in fact I have the similar Radeon LE TVO. Of course if you're watching movies, a remote would be nice. I think someone already meantioned the AIW 7500...it cost about as much as a Radeon 7500 and a Remote-Wonder, but includes several aditional features that make it a better value. But for basic functionality, I'd pic just about any Radeon card with a TV-Output.
