after much deliberation (cost in australia, performance and review of posts) i have nailed it down to these video cards to purchase. all are within 100 to 200 dollars australian:

GeForce3 TI500 HERCULES 3D Prophet III Ti500 64meg TV DVI Blue PCB, Blue Ramsinks, Blue Cooler

ATI RADEON 9000Pro HIS EXCALIBUR 64meg DDR 275mhz memory 275mhc core Tvout

ATI RADEON 8500 HERCULES 3D Prophet 8500 128meg Ultra Fast TV DUAL DISPLAY

ATI RADEON 8500LE HERCULES 3D Prophet 8500LE 128meg TV DVI DUAL DISPLAY

GeForce4 MX440 AURIGA 128meg DDR Ram Active cooling and RAMsinks Tvout

specifically these 3 are the ones im looking at

ATI RADEON 8500 HERCULES 3D Prophet 8500 128meg Ultra Fast TV DUAL DISPLAY
GeForce3 TI500 HERCULES 3D Prophet III Ti500 64meg TV DVI Blue PCB, Blue Ramsinks, Blue Cooler
GeForce4 MX440 AURIGA 128meg DDR Ram Active cooling and RAMsinks Tvout

so everyone, tell us which ones are the best, both the geforce3ti500 and atiradeon8500 are the same price, and the auriga is 170.

The Ti500 will probably overclock better but the R8500 has 128MB RAM and is slightly faster at stock speed. In my opinion, it depends on the type of games you play. The Ti500 will handle AA better while the R8500 will handle AF better. Which do you prefer and what type of games do you play? Do you watch a lot of DVDs on your computer? How fast is your computer (what are you major system components)? Will you ever do processor intensive work (such as photo editing) while watching DVDs?

Personally, I'd definitely avoid the MX440. I'd go for the Ti500 for AA and the R8500 for AF and DVD. I'm not sure what that card is clocked at either so that can also be a deciding factor for or against the R8500 card.

Skip the GF4 MX. The other 2 cards are much better. The GF3 Ti500 and the Radeon 8500 are pretty evenly matched when it comes to speed. The Radeon has slightly better features such as dual display, etc, but that only mattters if you want to take advantage of these features.

Both are good cards, but I would give a slight (very slight) advantage to the Radeon 8500.

You can check out reviews comparing the 2 cards, but be warned that both have had some major driver updates since origionally released, and most reviews will not reflect these driver updates.

hi and thanks
I play reasonably late level games. basically i want to play games on a relatively high level and wont do any video editting or the like. i have amdxp1800, 512sdram, soon to have 512ddr instead..and run an old nvidia 32 video card and switch between 14 (!) inch and 17inch monitors.
i would have thought the 128 ddr ram of the 8500 would have pushed it past the post on all counts, but it seems the ti500 is better for graphic intensive games, and the 8500 is more directed to video editting stuff?..
cheers

my guess is that you are getting the card from Gamedude?
my pick will defitnitly be the Radeon 8500 none LE version, since i'm an ATI fan. but u can also choose the Ti500, both these 2 cards performs similar

Personally I would go with whichever one is cheeper. The ATI card will let you use both your moniotors at the same time, so ther will be no need to switch. Plus it has more RAM, so I'm kinda leaning twords it. Check out the following for comaprisons, as I thing that they used the latest drivers http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/20021218/index.html

I don't trust that chart, far far too many inconsistencies compared to other sites. It's common knowledge that the R8500 is slightly ahead of any GF3 card.

R8500 is slightly ahead of GeForce3 and GeForce3 Ti200. It can't outperform GF3 Ti500 in almost every benchmark
