strange display behaviour on my Inspiron 8000 with XPsp2

My Inspiron 8K is a great laptop. I love its 1600x1200 display. But my
satisfaction is getting spoiled

At random intervals, especially when opening UltraEdit, display gets
corrupted in various ways. The problem disappear as soon as I close the
window and open again.
Today my mousepointer changed to a small grey square with 2 arrows.....

Anybody having the same problem?. It started some time after I got SP2. To
begin with, it was only black display for a couple of seconds.

Is there a better internet-forum to discuss that kind of problem?

Unless I get other suggestions, I am afraid I will have to make an XP
clean-install.

I have downloaded the videodriver last week from support.dell.com. It does
not make any difference.

Try plugging an external monitor to the system. If the problem appears
there, then you have an internal video card/board problem. If it clears up,
then your video flex cable or the LCD screen itself may be going... ?

When you reinstalled the video driver did you first uninstall the
previous one - like at least take it down to a generic driver, then
restart? I do not have an i8000 but I have over a couple decades of pc
experience, and what you describe seems to be video memory corruption
which could still be a driver problem or an errant application.

OR even before trying that again, I would try posting over on the
UltraEdit Display forum and or make sure you have the latest UE
updates - it looks like UE does some direct video manipulation (ie,
there is a setting in UE to properly re-enable ClearType after sp2, so
that also implies UE does some video manipulation, etc.)

That was it! After unchecking this line in UE´s display settings my display
nightmare is over.
