hi there,
i just bought an asus A7M266 (kt266) and coupled it with an athlonXP 1800+, after flashing the bios (just for it to recognise the 1800XP) my system started up and posted..everything ok except that everytime i raise the fsb to 266 making the athlon run at 11.5x 133= 1533 when windows XP starts it hangs ,and a blue screen pops up saying:
"windows has been shut down to prevent damage to the pc."
??????????????????????????????????????????????
that was my reaction then,
i know it's wierd so i am now running at 200fsb, 11.5x
safe mode if you ask me, what could be wrong?
here is my hardware set-up at a glance:
256 megs of ddr2100, hdd 40ATA100, radeon 8500/or geforce2MX400...
thanks

Go to the BIOS and check the CPU temp... it sounds like you're running hot. Temps at bootup should be in the low 40's...

What kind of heatsink and fan are you using. Check the mounting to make sure it is sitting cleanly on the CPU and make sure you scratch off the little pad and use some paste for better heat transfer.

Good luck!

Check if your PCI bus speed is 1/4 of the FSB at 133 MHz (133/4=33.3 MHz) otherwise you will be running your PCI devices at 44.3 MHz which is way over standard.

My case has so many fans that it hovers above the ground  .

Are you sure you have a A7M266? If it is so it has the AMD 760 chipset and not the KT266. The one with the KT266 is the A7V266.

Did you flash the wrong BIOS?????

oups, sorry about that, it is actually the amd761 chipset, and no i flashed in the right bios, if it was the wrong one, the board wouldn't even started!
and about startup temps, well the cpu is running cool even with the 266fsb...about 45 idle....
could it be the pci clock?sounds logical.
i will check that and get back to you guys.

yeah I know it wouldnt have booted.

BTW the 760 chipset consists of a 761 Northbridge and a 766 southbridge (but the board uses the VIA 82686B southbridge)

just like the i440BX has the 82443BX chips as the northbridge and 82371 as the southbridge. usually we refer to complete set of chips in the chipset by a single number.

so i guess the pci's are ok, anyway i have tried removing all of them...but still the same

Have you tried the latest Via drivers, if you have the 686b Southbridge.

but shouldn't the shipped drivers work fine with 266fsb?????????????????????????? or is it a windows xp compatibilty/mobo drivers issue?
and you see the problem is that i now can't downgrade to the windows98se unless i format, and that's the last thing i want to do.

I had that mobo it was very stable and friendly. I gave it away with a 1200 100MHz Win98se and haven't heard of any problems with it. I updated the BIOS once, to accept a 1.4 TB.
I just check Asus sight and I did not see any support for XP with A7M266. I did the A7M266-D mobo. I could be wrong, but I didn't see it.

Did your BIOS have the setting for XP1800? When I updated one of my mobo it had the XP settings 1600-1900.
or
Did you change the settings to 11.5x 133?

i have a question will the a7m266 work with a 1600 xp because thats what i ordered and it was one that new egg sold as a package so as far as i can see they are compatiable but also i figured newegg took them being compatible into account

It's only confusing to people who won't spend time learning.

Sorry found the support
A7M266 BIOS Ver. 1005 10/15/2001
Add support for AMD® Athlon XP CPU

If you clear the CMOS that's in your manual. Then boot up and change your cpu to XP1600. You should be ok. Shouldn't have to manual set it 11.5 133 after you get it up and running then you can tweak your bios 4x, fast write and such. If it still doesn't work, then your right #@$$^%#$

Hey Guys.
Right now if you order the a7m266 it's bios is 1.05 so it is fully compatiable with amd xp's. I just built my first computer and i had no problems at all with any hardware except for me buying a cheap case that doesn't excatly fit the mobo, wierd. well a7m266 is a great mobo and works at 1400 mhz with the xp 1600 witch is 100% speed. if you use a xp 1600, a7m266, nvida geforce 2, 300 watt pwr supp, lg cdrom, teac floppy, wet dig hd dr it is my experience it goes smoothly. I used a 120 gb hd dr it takes forever to format because it comes to 114 gb. wow does it take forever.
