SSID = SSID but NO connection

Hi, I have bought a Sitecom wireless PCI card and have set it up to
match the SSID name to what I have installed on the modem. On my laptop,
exactly the same settings work fine. However, to connect my home PC, I
first need to disable the SSID check in the modem and only then does my
home PC 'see' the network. The SSID in the PC is EXACTLY the same as in
the modem. Why is it not working?

I am referring to the WAP. Some more info: on my laptop I am using the
sitecom software, on the PC I use the standard Windows XP functionality
for wireless networks, because the sitecom s/w did not work here at all.

I think I have not expressed myself clearly, but I am learning wireless
terminology on the fly. Sorry about that. Anyway, I do not have a
separate router. I have a ADSL modem with a wireless link to my PC and
laptop. The modem allows for more wireless connections. As I said, the
SSID is exactly the same on the access point, the PC and the laptop. The
laptop sees the wireless network; the PC does not.
