...what would it be?
Please don't say "I wish it wasn't so slow, and made me double post, and...", because that's been talked into the ground already.
Examples: different forum software (for a different look, more features, etc), different/more rules, more enforced rules, different sections, forum members-only features (early looks at reviews, votes on topics, etc).
Let's hear what you guys have to say.

I like it the way it is because I can talk about Hooters.
The only way to get me to stop talking about Hooters would be to give me Doctor Hooter as my user title. But I am so fixated on Hooters I could never stop adoring the damn things. I'll never stop talking about Hooters.
They're Grrreat!
Although it would be nice to have animations or pictures associated with our sig lines.
Of course mine would be a lovely animation of some giant bouncing Hooters.

Being completely neutral on a subject is impossible. But a good moderator should be able to tell the difference between trolling/flaming and a simple debate/discussion/arguement. That person would also have to responsible enough to erase just the inacceptable posts.
AMD technology + Intel technology = Intel/AMD Pentathlon IV; the <b>ULTIMATE</b> PC processor
moderators would be nice...
but i think what we need more than that is the "terminate thread" ability.
stop any more posts in a dull insipid flamewar thread/ any threads of extreme stupidiy and flame inducing.
different forum engine?
many i see use a similar variant...
extremepcuk, overclockers.com.au.
seems to wrok well.
oh, but definately LONGER SIGS.
The lack of thermal protection on Athlon's is cunning way to stop morons from using AMD.
| Quote : but i think what we need more than that is the "terminate thread" ability. |
Threads can be closed by Fredi. If you want an example, do a search for "via sucks!". There was a thread that consisted merely of that phrase some months back. It is (as far as I know) the only thread to be locked in that manner.
<font color=orange>Quarter</font color=orange> <font color=blue>Pounder</font color=blue> <font color=orange>Inside</font color=orange>
Are there are better forum engines out there? Get one in which you can ignore people. It just has to be an option.
Make the sigs longer.
Get rid of the sig of the week since no one takes care of it.
Mods. We need mods. Fredi is great when he's around and he's helped me out a bit, but he's rarely around. We need someone to close threads. We also need a mod that can put things in perspective without being biased. There are way too many threads now in which one side says one thing, another says something else, but the truth remains buried under all the bias. The CPU section is filled with way more than opinions at this point.
Create an Intel section. Create an AMD section. It seems to work on other forums.
Reset peoples titles, but not post counts if they deserve it. Bring back the post count so that people can see who got reset even though they have a zillion posts. Give out custom titles for the morons as well as the contributors. I'm not sure what's professional, but Forum Troll should really be a title. I hate it when a troll creates a BS post only to have a bunch of newbies come and say "really??". Let there be an Intel Lover and an AMD lover title.
Create a WinXP section. I have no idea why this hasn't been done.
<font color=red>God</font color=red> <font color=blue>Bless</font color=blue> <font color=red>America!</font color=red>
At the very least, is there a way that a user who created a thread can lock it? That would be an improvement since a responsable poster could at least stop the carnage.
<font color=red>God</font color=red> <font color=blue>Bless</font color=blue> <font color=red>America!</font color=red>
Maybe have a user rating type deal. We can rate the members and whenever they make an intelligent post or flame, we can give them a higher or lower rating. Once their rating gets below a certain level after a certain number of votes, then they get a "forum troll" title etc etc... It can be useful for new people who are looking for help.

<font color=red>different forum software (for a different look, more features, etc), different/more rules, more enforced rules, different sections, forum members-only features (early looks at reviews, votes on topics, etc).</font color=red>
Yeah, I seen a sight like that. They could add a silly little picture next to their name, add pictures to the sight and other neat stuff. Though that may slow things down even more. And though it was cool looking I didn't sigh in, there's no place like home. Even though I get some lumps from time to time. That's what we need a score card. hehe
i'd say a chat room would probably do wonders. i think more people would be apt to "slug it out" in chatroom if there was one.
[insert philosophical statement here]
Good idea, that'll work

How about automatically locking threads that have not been posted to for X weeks/months? That would stop some of the ridiculous and often accidental wars over old posts arising....

To the gentleman in the pink Tutu
I still like it the way it is.
If there is something important to be said I think a person can see through trolling and flamming.
The trollers and flammers provide entertainment and once the smoke clears something will be learned. Whether it's about hardware, software or morality.
I don't think the idea of voting for how responsible a member is or having titles such as forum troll are a good idea because it places a judgmental bias on the member.
Freedom of speech is great and when a member gets out of hand we the group as a whole have been very efficient policing ourselves.
No need to give a member a special label like forum troll because if a member trolls we'll figure out who they are and ignore them anyway.

yes, the forum look might be improved.
first, they will have to rewrite the code to make it shorter, use CSS, HTML4.0 standards and relative links. That wil help faster browsing for unfortunate ppl like me who stay on the on the rside of the globe, need 33 hops to get to te THGC server and have a 64k cable that loads even the login page in 1:30 minutes or longer.
Each member could have a personalised icon to represent him/her that would reflect his/her personality. You could select one from stock icons or upload your own.
A client for this forum is absolutely necessary, I am trying to write one that looks like Outlook Express newsgroups reader will release it in freeware asa it is ready.
A official body of members that would look over technology matters and other social matters, like a fraternity dedicated to computer hardware but with a commitment to the society.
and thge best thing, we could arrange yearly THGC bash at some venue in the US or Europe or Asia where we guys could actually meet each other and talk and fight, Yo would certainly like this.
and then, bigger signatures, ability to post image links (maybe not attatchments) of course that would be moderated before they are online.
is that enough?

I really am not that bother about my post count - I just post for the sake of it - I have calmed down recently after my banning. I still think mods are the way to go. Certain people from each timezone so the site is modded all the time - just a few members. Obviously it has to be people who are going to be on the site constantly (more or less)
So
Eastern Asia - Some one from Aussie or Nz
Western Asia - Girish
Middle Europe - Who's from europe???
Britain - Day(Me!!) Night - I know Camiebz is on at night.
Big jump to The US - Gotta be FB - I would say raystonn but he's heavily intel so he might be biased - No offence.
Possibly a candian so we need one from one side of america and one from the other as you guys span a couple of time zones. (greedy bastards)

Thanks for all the ideas guys. I have no idea what the forum software does and doesn't support, and I don't know if Fredi is going to comment in this thread at all.
And remember that all my comments are just my point of view, I'm not commenting in Fredi's place (just in case it may seem like it).
Pictures/Avatars/Whatever - This would slow down the forum more, I don't think anyone wants that.
Longer sigs - I agree, would be nice.
Mods - That will be worked on, rules must be put in place also. That is being worked on at the moment.
As for mods in different time zones, I personally don't
Ignore function - I personally don't like this, because you miss part of the conversation. Perhaps you could signify that a post is by someone you've put on this list? Then you could skip over it easily, but not have it disappear completely? Don't know if the software supports this.
Member ratings - This would be nice, as long as it doesn't get too detailed (like eBay). Anandtech's forums have a nice system, simply a rating out of 5 stars.
Sig of the Week - This responsibility may be able to be passed on to a mod, I'll make sure Fredi gets asked about it when the time comes. I would like to keep it, but it must stay what it's supposed to be.
Locking Threads - I don't like the idea of locking your own thread, since trolls could say something and then prevent people who know better from dispelling the myth.
Other Sections - That will probably be last on the priority list, but we'll see what happens.
Chat - I wouldn't like to see this on the website, since it would be an administrative nightmare. An IRC channel where people could drop by might be nice.
I'm always on MSN Messenger at work (fattyburger@msn.com). Feel free to add me to your list if you want. Others are on Messenger as well.
<font color=orange>Quarter</font color=orange> <font color=blue>Pounder</font color=blue> <font color=orange>Inside</font color=orange>
Rather than an ignore function that makes the user invisible you just change the font color to grey (depending on the background, but on white it would be light grey) so that you can barely see the writing and just float over it.
<font color=red>God</font color=red> <font color=blue>Bless</font color=blue> <font color=red>America!</font color=red>
Right, that's basically what I was thinking. And then you can highlight it if you want to read it.
<font color=orange>Quarter</font color=orange> <font color=blue>Pounder</font color=blue> <font color=orange>Inside</font color=orange>
That’s a tough one FatBurger. There are a lot of solutions. But solutions cost money and time and I am sure THG Community isn’t the highest thing on their budget tree. Perhaps a simple forum reset could do you all some good. Account resets may also help. But the biggest thing that could save hard disk space would be to delete posts after say 30 to 90 days (that’s a kind of safe standard I think). But I wouldn’t mind seeing a new gateway software and/or hardware. Because I have noticed once you are in the forum it seems to be quite fast. Not as fast as say [h]'s or Anad but decent (unless you have to hop like a rabbit to get to the site
).
Now I don’t think the forum software should be replaced as some of you know Fredi did hand code this site himself, it is his baby and I am sure he’s more than apprehensive of just dumping it. But slight modifications would do good (he did recode and optimize it a while back).
Now I personally would love to have a little dancing spud under my name it would be hella cool. But I do know from icq chats with fredi he can implement the ignore function/graying/user opinion votes/and user mod capacity. You’ll have to convince the man that it is necessary to implement them, but remember site administrators don’t like loosening control of there sites.
Well I have said my piece back into the wood works I go.

Perhaps the forums would load faster if only the actual content would load when you go to a new page, instead of the entire page (i.e. all the buttons and stuff to the left).
