Windows Messenger v5.0.0381 - Unable to delete a contact

I'm using Windows Messenger v5.0.0381 under Windows XP Professional with
Service Pack 2 applied.

I have a couple of contacts in my list which I wish to remove. When I
attempt to remove either of the contacts, after confirming that I'm sure
about removing them, I get a dialog as follows...

<contactname> could not be deleted. Please try again later.

....and when I click on the OK I get signed out of Messenger. The contact is
not deleted. If I attempt to move these contacts to another group I get a
similar message to the above advising that the contact cannot be moved. The
contact is then added to the target group (i.e. the group I wanted to move
them to) but not removed from the source group (i.e. the group I wanted to
move them from).

I've attempted to find where my contact list is held and come across the
following promising looking REG_BINARY entries...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MessengerService\ListCache\.NET
Messenger Service

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MessengerService\ListCacheU\.NET
Messenger Service

....but I presume from the name of the keys that the values held are just
cached copies of my contact list which must be held server-side somewhere
because if I visit another PC running Messenger and sign into it with my
account then I am shown the same contact list.

How can I remove these contacts that I no longer want?

I'm not sure how to resolve your issue. However, you may want to install the
latest release and try it again.

Anyone? This is crying out for an MVP's response... :)

Thanks, Bert. That's got to be worth a shot. Last time I checked (a few days
ago) Microsoft were still advising that the version of Messenger installed
as a result of applying SP2 to WinXPPro was the latest available. I guess
not any more. I'll give the latest version a shot, although the fault was
also apparent pre-SP2.

Greetings Dave,

Try closing Messenger, deleting those keys and then trying (that will at least rule out the
client problem).

As a last resort, you might try installing MSN Messenger instead and trying there (as it uses
a different version of the protocol):

As you said, the contact list is on the server. You can remove contacts
from any PC.

It doesn't work on the other workstation either though.

Strange, so it looks like the problem is on the server.

You can try logging in from here:
http://www.e-messenger.net/ (no installation needed, only the Java
Plug-In must be installed)
Then click on "Options", and then "Contacts". From there, you can delete
contacts.

If it doesn't work either, I don't know what you can do besides what
Jonathan suggested:

"As a last resort, you might try installing MSN Messenger instead and
trying there (as it uses
a different version of the protocol)"

Hi,

Actually you have a great idea here but don't use e-messenger, use the WebMessenger:
http://webmessenger.msn.com

Also, is this an @hotmail.com or @msn.com account?

I know WebMessenger, but the problem is: it's impossible to delete
contacts with this version ! I just checked again.

Blero, Jonathan,

Exited Windows Messenger.
Logged into eMessenger.
Deleted unwanted contacts.
Logged out of eMessenger.
Logged into Windows Messenger.
Unwanted contacts well and truly gone.

Thank you kindly for the help - it's most appreciated. :)
