Quick Launch problem

Every time I install WinXP (should be every 2 months, but recently I must do it every month or so) I get different problems which stick 'till I reinstall (when I get new problems). This time it's the Quick Launch menu which disappears every time I reboot or close the Explorer.exe process. Any thoughts?

Also, when is SP2 released (FINAL, not BETA)?

POST is way overrated, the black screen and beeps should be enough for most people.

Explorer.exe is the SHELL of your XP computer.

without it you will/should have no windows features such as taskbar, start menu, quicklaunch. if you have had these in the past when ending explorer then its a miricle.

you should never need to close explorer.exe unless

A) your GUI has frozen with menus/ taskbar not working (you will restart explorer.exe after closing it also)

B) you download another shell for windowsXP that will replace its functions, such as Geoshell or somthing.

but seriously don't damn well close explorer.exe

there are lists on the internet of process's that can safly be closed, explorer.exe is NOT one of them

Oh and P.S. why do you install so regularly???

i installed windowsXP about 7 times in 3 weeks LOL, when i was trying to find the correct driver combination and such to get a stable computer. it was also a lack of experience on my part.

since then i have had my windows XP running for 1 year without a re-install. with only 2 blue screens (both my personal fault)

if you run a tidy computer and regularly... defrag, virus check, spyware check, uninstall unused software - and hand remove their folders, clean the registry, and delete other unused files. you will effectivly be having a clean install of windows.

i mean all a fresh instal does is clean up everything. wheras you can infact do most of it by hand, it takes less time to keep a clean computer than to reinstall every 2 months.

from the counds of it, as soon as somthing goes wrong (possibly you created the issue in the first place) you run away from it by re-installing.

its not going to prove much advantage to do this.

and BTW you might want to try using Linux if you find windows so unstable.

Ideally, I'd like to reinstall Windows every 3 months just for the big performance boost I get. But in the last months there has always been something else making me reinstall, a few times it was new hardware (new computer, new OS HD or new drivers like from Nvidia to ATI), other times it was a corrupt system folder (one time it was \Windows\system32 caused by a 3rd party defrag software and another time it was \Windows\system32\config\ caused by overclocking).

Now, closing explorer.exe is great for 3 reasons:
1. Sometimes explorer teakes up to 75MB of RAM, and I'm not even talking about Virtual RAM.
2. If a window responds slowly or not at all, closing it and reoppening it would usually solve the problem.
3. It's easily started by typing explorer.exe in the task manager -> new process. (this isn't really a reaseon)

Now, can anyone tell me what to do with this problem? I don't wanna reinstall, but I will!

OK, problem fixed by itself, have no idea why, didn't do nothing.
