Hi, I'm irritated. Win XP has been acting weird for quite some time. I get errors during games saying the program has to shut down. I get those same errors for IE, AIM, Microsoft Word, and others. It doesn't seem to matter, just whatever feels like screwing up. Also, my computer restarts at random sometimes. either during a game, or just watching tv through my capture card. Also, in POST, it used to say that I had PC2100 RAM, but now its changed to PC1600. It still recognizes that i have 512, but its changed. I've reformated to fix the windows errors several times, but nothing seems to work. I could use any help whatsoever. here are my stats.
Win xp on an Athlon XP 1600
Asus KT266 Mobo
512 PC2100 Ram
Aver Tv Studio card
128 mb Geforce 4 ti 4200 video
2 hardrives, 30gb and 20 gb.

Also, I had kazaa with all its spyware crap, but i've removed it all and it doesn't seem to be related.
Thanks

Try running Memtest86 first and see if your RAM is producing errors, you can download it here http://www.bootdisk.com/utility.htm, bottom of the page under the memory section.

Post the results of the test, just let memtest run for about 15Min, and see if you get any errors at all.

it wouldnt be like that if you installed all the stuff you needed and left it that way forever. xp would be fine forever, its all the garbage people install on it.

You're probably dead on the money with that one, I've seen people running their original installations of Win95, needing a new modem or something like that, with the OP/SYS still performing normally, all they ever use the computer for is email and printing a letter every now and then, they never surf the net, or download anything. If thats all I used my computer for, I probably wouldn't have one.

If his memory checked out good, that was going to be one of my suggestions, to backup any important files if he can? and reinstall the OP/SYS. He's probably the owner of a bad stick of RAM though, and just needs to replace it.
