I prefer not to use PCI slot 1, so the gfx card gets lots of room to breath.
Some mobo manuals tell of which PCI slots are shared with each other and/or with controllers etc.
Usually 2 & 4 work for my Abit board. I only use two though.

I've moved the audigy card from 4 to 2 and now it seems to work ok 
Slot 1 shares with the agp
Slot 4 shares with usb controllers
Slot 5 shares with raid
