Hi, I'm building my own computer.

A7A266 motherboard
Radeon 7500
256mb ddr pc2100
1.2ghz amd Thunderbird
Sound blaster value 5.1
300w p/s
Lately I've had the problem that when I hit the power switch in the back of the computer the green light comes on on the motherboard and when i hit the power button on the front nothing happens. I've tried to refer to the manual but unfortounetally the Asus website isn't working quite right right now. I think it is that the cables i've connected from the front of the case to the motherboard are incorrectly plugged in. One question i have is white supposed to be ground? I've been taught taht red is + and black is ground, and this computer case has every color of the spectrum but red and black, which doesn't really help me. If the asus website gets working soon i can figure out which pins shoud be ground and power, but i don't know which wires are ground and power. I'm pretty sure I had it all figured out, but the computer doesn't power on. Is there anything else this could be?

Also I forgot taht the fans do not turn on, nor is there power to the cd-rom drive, hard drive doesn't kick in, etc. No picture on monitor.

My parents warned me to wear earplugs when shooting a rifle, but never using my computer.
Edited by fullofquestions on 01/11/02 08:01 PM.

It would seem you've plugged the HDD LED wires to the wrong pins. Also double check the HDD cable to the mobo. It might be the wrong way round. Red stripe to the power cable side of the drive.

Not sure about the wire orientation, but I always face the lettered side of the connectors to the inside of the mobo.

I think there must be something else misconnected then the cables to the front of your case. It doesn't matter how you plug in the power or reset switch they don't have a really + side. If you misconnect a LED it will just not work until you reverse the cabels.
Don't you have a manual that came with your mobo that explains how the front cabels have to be connected?

My case has so many fans that it hovers above the ground  .

Hi, thanks a lot. The cables were connected improperly, asus.com finally fixed their website so I could get the manual and connnect them correctly. Now I have insalled windows and everything is good, but after rebootin 1 or 2 times the cd-rom doesn't show up anymore, but it does in the bios. Under system in control panels it says something about ms-dos drivers because of incompatibility or something like that. I'm going to flash my bios. Reply if you think I don't need to. Thanks.

I have never needed to flash my BIOS yet!

The BIOS sees the drive. Leave the BIOS alone.

out of curiosity why do you say leave the bios alone? If there is updated which there are laot of with this board why not take advantage?

My signature really sucks.

I'm curious, what make CD-ROM is having this problem? Maybe they have updated firmware or special drivers for Windows to fix your problem.

AMD technology + Intel technology = Intel/AMD Pentathlon IV; the ULTIMATE PC processor

The CD-ROM is seen by the BIOS. Why flash them. BIOS flashes shouldn't be done unless:

1. You know what you're doing.
2. You feel the update is really worth it.

With respect to fullofquestions, if he's posting about case wire mixing, he shouldn't be flashing his BIOS. He just built the thing. Let it run a while at least.
