Went over to a freind's house, who just got a new comp- XP1900, 512DDR, KT266A, GF3 Ti500, 7.2k RPM HDD from maxtor, all from www.buyabs.com- oh, and XP home edition. Well, I booted it up, and after taking 2 mins to boot, it was slow as hell. Things took 20-30 secs, even 5 mins at the startup of XP to load (such as right clicking). My 1.2 Ghz T-bird, 512 DDr AMD760, Quadro DCC, 7.2K 40GB 75GXP, XP Profeesional, is wayy faster. Boots in under 15 secs, and everything is immediate. Just goes to show how much proper configuration influences everything. During Feb. vacation, or a weekend when I have no homework, I'll format his hdd and install XP and config my way. No wonder he wasn't bragging about it when he got it!
Only if you let me see the Umpa Lumpa- Homer Simpson.
if i was there i would
A. cannabalise his PC and replace most of it with old parts
or if i was in a good mood,
B. check to see if DMA is enabled all round, install mobo drivers, remove as many dumbass apps from startup as possible, then do a big defrag

Follow the clicks. At the end of the journey you'll know what's wrong with your friend's new computer.
Most likely you will be downloading a few WinXP optimized drivers, reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling WinXP.
Left click on start button.
Left click on Control Panel.
Double left click on Administrative Tools.
Double left click on Event Viewer.
Left click on System in the explorer tree on the left.
In the right window there will be a list of operations check to see if there are any hardware errors or warnings.
Most likely there will be a few errors for IDE configuration.
surely there is problem with almost everything, check BIOS configuration, improper installation, improper or bad drivers and that too installed in a incorrect order, especially a bad IDE driver surely.
add to that a crappy board and overall extremely unoptimised system.
its difficult to believe a system of such caliber can perform so badly. of course, setting up the software right can only salvage half of it, rest is all about real good hardware. you got to have that in the first place.
BTW what make is that KT266A board?

ive got a beefy 56k modem too... and i downloaded the entire win2k service pack 2!
thats 100Mb of goodness!
but as for option A, pillage his good stuff, then claim that "performance is overrated" and "drivers are unoptimised", then see how far u can get home before u notice him chasing you!
LOL

An hour and a half you could have spent doing something else.
How many of you watch your computer download something - Isn't it brilliant watching a novice stare at the screen for hours cos they don't know you can run it in the back ground.

If it ain't broke, Don't fix it.
wasnt hard... just too a little time.
lucky that modem use on win2k is much more efficient than 98.
as my isp boots me after 4 hours i also used a download accelerator.
i do that with porn too.
set kazaa running, then go away and play something like baldurs gate. i have fun playing the game, and i check back occasionaly to see how my porn is going.
u would be suprised at how quick the porn pile can build up.

I recently had my bandwidth castrated from a cable modem to a 56k. This is after three straight years of broadband. In a three month period (DSL or Cable wasn't available yet) I was still able to manage all of my downloads. I never got over 4.7.
I downloaded the Free Baldurs Gate II expansion 'The Darkest Day' on a 56k modem. 266MB!! Just leave the sucker running overnight and set it up to auto connect when you get disconnected.
The one thing I stopped doing during that period was web surfing and posting on this forum, you cant believe how slow these pages load on a 56k.
