I forgot to screw in the mounting brackets first and ultimately ended up screwing the mobo straight into the case....will this permanently mess my board up???

Yes, and you will never be able to have children.

Did you turn it on when it was screwed in? Then it might be busted, but only one way to find out: test it.

i plugged everything in and pushed the power button on the back.....as soon as i did that a faint, high pitched sound emanated that quickly stopped....it sorta sounded like a vacuum cleaner right when u push the off button except much fainter. if u think my board is scorched, can i send it back for another?

Possibly, but I doubt it.
It could also be that your PSU died. The high pitched sound is kind of strange for a motherboard dying.

If you got lucky the protection in the PS kicked in and you can't reboot for a minute or two. Fix it and try again.

If screwed then just take it back to the store and tell them it doesn't work. No details or they might give you the "funny" look. :D
