Hi there.

I'm about to invest in a computer but I'm not sure which chipset to go for. I'm aware that KT266A is faster than nforce but is the difference worth the extra money spend on a graphich and sound card (which comes for free with nforce)??

Whích moterboard should I choose (I'm not really into overclocking):
KT 266A ??
nforce ??

I didn't feel the difference was big enough. If you're looking for a great computer that isn't the tip top of the technology heap (for a week or two), you can save quite a bit of money by going with the nForce. I found them so affordable, I bought my wife one too.

I would go for the Via KT266A. If you buy sound card and Graphic card separatly then you can always reuse them in new computer. I am still using SB Live I brought 3 years ago.

flikflak,

Take a look at this before you decide what to get:
<A HREF="http://www.xbitlabs.com/mainboards/nforce-1/" target="_new">http://www.xbitlabs.com/mainboards/nforce-1/</A>
There's a part II that you can get to from there as well. Very informative.

Also, note that some KT266a boards have quite good sound onboard (eg. Soyo Dragon+) and other features raid, USB2, etc.

Of course don't forget about the Via "pci problem" discussed here:

Sadly there's no perfect answer. I know I'm still searching :frown:

I plan on building my new box in a month or a bit more, and I'm going to get one of the new nForce's (415D). They are the same as the older ones, except they don't have onboard video and will probably cost about $100. Pair that up with a fast Athlon XP and a GF3 (or GF4, but I doubt they will be affordable) and you're talking a cheap, fast computer.

I have an nForce board, and I couldn't be happier with it. Why did I choose nForce? It's cheaper overall.

Reply to:
SB Live is a PCI card... :) Not the best for KT266A.

SB Live is a PCI card is not the problem. The problem is that it require a lot PCI bandwidth and does not work well with other PCI bandwidth hug.

I never said they will have compatibility problem. I did mean that people willing to run a lot of PCI hardware should go for another chipset than Via. And yes I am very glad that Intel failed with its 850 and 860 chipsets. That will probably bring them to a more realistic price policy.

In my opion,I think you could directly choose the KT266A,why?
Ok,don't you see that the price of the mainboard with the graphic and sound card totally won't go higher than nforce, although there's a little blemish on the PCI bandwith useing,it's goods still go more than its very "bads"
Hey,man,don't hesitate another minute again,
Just do it!!
nothing!!
