Gui not fully loading

Rig:
Win98se
Crucial 512mb ddr333 2.5
Athlon xp 1700
GF3 orig @212/516
Ibm 30gig
M/B (new) MSI KT400
PSU 400w

Recently rebuilt this rig. It ran fine for first day..(didn’t do enough testing though)
This morning it would NOT complete loading the GUI. It came very close, but
Stopped right after the windows startup sound. Taskbar icons don’t make it, but
all the shortcut icons are there. Mouse moves, but no functionality to select anything.

Reset all bios settings….no change
CPU temp @ 42C
Voltages well within spec.
No beeps from RAM or Video

Will try forcing default VGA safe mode tonight, maybe the video card
took a dump? Seems unlikely though.
Will try another HD with win98 if that doesn’t work, (to rule out software).

Any thoughts from the Pros ???

After installing the new mobo did you reformat etc. to get rid of the old chipset drivers? And then install all the new chipset drivers?

Heh...No. Not a format...not yet anyway. The HD I put in was
already loaded with 98se (on another m/b).
Well of course I had to reboot a couple times to
get the HD (windows)to see all the new m/b buses and chipset drivers.
But I've done that trick scores of times without problems.
In the end I may have to format anyway....sigh.
This is what I want to avoid unless I have no choice.
