For past half hour or so I cannot sign onto MSN Messenger service. Keeps
telling me that contact list is unavailable--although I still can connect to
Internet thru local ISP.

Does anyone know for sure what is going on???

Looks like a worldwide outage. I'm in So. California and I've been
experiencing these same symptons for the past 24 hrs. Let's see how
Microsoft is going to spin this one.

If in fact the outage was caused by a global virus, the last thing
anyone should be doing is trying to load or re-install MSN Messenger.
I'd steer clear of it until MS makes an official announcement,
declaring it repaired and safe to logon again.

I found this elsewhere...

"The MSN server has just been hit with a Worm Virus and is getting
service problems worldwide. Best to stay off Messenger and check for
news updates (from a reliable source such as MSN, of course).
This worm will compromise a system if infected."

Hi,

On what grounds are you taking such a stand? It sure isn't routine
maintenance, that's for sure.
MS usually does "maintenance" in the wee hours and they usually only
last minutes to maybe 1 hour. If you know something everyone does not,
then please feel free to elaborate. Otherwise, statements like "not
true" or "there is no virus" have no credibility.

I should clarify... I know that article is old but...

It has happened before, and will happen again.

The difference between the incidence in July 2001 and yesterday was that in
July 2001 MS took the system off line. Whereas yesterday it was not
completely blocked, we were able to intermittently access MSN and Windows
Messengers.
