i have to say i love em. picture is great, color is vivid and rich. the biggest complaint i have about it (and it's nothing that bothers me at all, just if i DID have to point something out) would be for about the first 20min you turn it on, the picture is sorta shifted to the right a little. but i talked to viewsonic, they said it's just the monitor warming up. but usually it's not a problem if i'm not working on it i just let the screensaver go

Well, I have perhaps the oldest but certainly not the suckiest rig,

AMD K6-II 350@500 MHz, under a stock intel P3 cooler!
RedFox AGPALi board (older rev A, does only ATA/33)
32MB PC133@100 CAS3@2 SDRAM
10.2GB Samsung Voyager HD @5400 rpm
Cirrus Logic 5440 PCI/VGA display card w/1MB memory
Samsung 14" 45Bn monitor
52X Samsung CD-ROM drive
ESS1869 ISA sound card
Typhoon 180W speakers
and last item sucks - a crappy cheap Taiwan made Tree AT case with 200W SMPS.

Its running Windows98SE, the BIOS and Windows are hand tuned for max performance, and is well maintained, it boots in under 40 secs, all apps load and run heck fast, faster than the next door P-III 866 system!

At times the 32MB seems too less, so I might upgrade it to 64 or maybe 128 sometime later!

And this is what my new rig is going to be, by this monthend:
Athlon XP1600+, OCed it to probably XP2000+ or thereabouts
Asus A7A266-E motherboard (I am great fan of ALi chipsets)
256MB PC2100 DDR-SDRAM (maybe PC2700 is available by then)
40 GB Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm HD
Asus GeForce2MX w/32MB SGRAM
Samsung 15"/17" monitor
Samsung 8X DVD-ROM/12X CD-RW combo drive
Soundblaster Live! Value or just PCI128 Vibra
Antec/Lexpro 600/800W speakers, two pairs if possible!
Possibly Chenbro Genie Server case with 300W SMPS, I dont like the fancy ATX cases available right through the town!

girish

Nothing is fool-proof. Fools are Ingenious!

Reply to girish

Sorry Girish, but I think this one might beat yours in the age department:

The sad rig:
Motherboard:AOpen AP5t Socket 7 [ 4xPCI, 3xISA,2xSDRAM,4x(olderRAM?),
CPU:Pentium MMX 200mhz@ 291.MHz
Memory: 256mb sdram (PC133)
Hard drive: Quantum Fireball 2.1a 2.2Gigs
Case and power: 15" case, 250W ps
Videocard: AOpen PV75 graphics card(...shows a picture)
Soundcard: SB 128 bit.l
Network cards: 10 base T ethernet card
Floppy drive: generic 3.5" floppy
Disk drive: 24x cd-rom drive
Mouse: Serial mouse
Keyboard: ps/2 kb
Monitor: Magnavox SuperVGA 32bit color 800x600@60Hz, 640x480@75MHz
viewable screen: 11"x 8" ; diagnal 13"
Other ports: Printer and PS/2 mouse port.

It serves its purpose, but I hate the 60MHz refresh....my eyes,,

Extras: -MLi computer speakers
-Koss M/20 Microphone

The good system:
Motherboard: Soyo Dragon Plus!
CPU:Athlon XP 1800 (needs unlocking soon.Need better cooling first )
Memory: 384mb DDR PC2100, 266MHz(non ECC, or registered
Floppydrive: Generic 1.44mb fd
Hard drive: Seagate Barracuda IV 40G, 7200rpm, ATA100
CD drive: LG 24x10x40x cdr/rw
Graphics card: 3D labs Oxygen GVX1 AGP 32M
Network card: Built on 10/100 LAN
Sound card: Built on C-Media audio( hooked up to stereo. Its not 5.1, but its still really good)
Case: ATX 18" tower case. 4x5.25", 2x3.5", 1x3.5"(internal)
Power supply: Enermax 365W ps
Monitor: Samsung 900NF. 19" .25mm Flat-CRT 2048x1536@69Hz Refresh
Keyboard: Logictech Internet keyboard
Mouse: MS Intellimouse Optical.5-buttons, 1 wheel.usb or ps/2 I hate MS but they really did a nice job on this mouse,
Extras: -Copper shim ( havent needed it yet )
-Volcano 6cu+, 7000rpm cpu fan

If there was one thing I would change about this system, it would be the graphics card. To either a Elsa Gloria III or an ATI Fire GL 3 or even 2.
Cant get either of them for a low enough price yet though

and yes, i get that shifting too
i dont worry about it too.

maybe i should rephrase that...it's the most stable OS i have ever used....
it has crashed on me a total of 1 time....when i set the vid card to display 256 colors....it couldnt handle 256 colors so i had to keep it at 16 colors.
i've used win 3.1/95/98/98se/me/2k/and xp and out of those OS's....win 3.1 crashed the least amount of times (win me being the most).

AMD_MAN, this might be a long shot, but you dont have a pic. of your system anywhere do you? Your set up sounds well planned out. Im mostly looking for references for when I mod my current system, as I havent done so, so far. Not serious ones atleast Yours seems like its seriously modded, and might be a good reference.

EDO ram for the 486 SX-25, that caught my eye. hi hi
EDO was only used at it's full potential starting with the high end AMD 486 DX-4 120 cpus. Perhaps some Intel 486 DX-4 100 sys were optimised for EDO.
Is'nt this so really interesting, really  stuff
