I'm looking to buy either the Inspiron 9100 or 8600. I like the Inspiron 8600 for its Centrino cpu and less bulky design. However, the graphics card is limited to the 128mb Radeon 9600 and the Inspiron 9100 has the option to upgrade to 256mb Radeon 9800. I want to use this notebook for the next 3-4 years so I'd like the graphics to last a while. I'm not looking at the Dell XPS line either (too pricey). If the Inspiron 8600 line had better graphics options I'd go for that one. Are there any plans for Dell to introduce the new NV40/R420 Nvidia and ATI graphics processors into the Inspiron 8600 line anytime soon? Also how do you know what rotational speed the hard drive is for the Dell machines? Only one of the options say it has the 7200rpm and that's the 60gb hdd. Does that mean the 80-100gb operate at 5400rpm or lower?
Hello! I also was in your situation. I finally decided to get the 8600. I went with the ATI 9600 Pro Turbo video card. PCI express comes out for Notebooks soon, so if you could hold out on that. But the 8600 is solid. I decided to go for it over the 9100 because of the Centrino and weight. Also the 9100 is more of a desktop replacement, I dont mind carrying the 8600 around in my backpack. Lastly the Power adapter for the 9100 has a built in sub-woofer which means extra weight, which i did not want. I got a good configuration for $1500 because that was my credit limit from Dell. The only problem with the dells is that the video cards run hot. around 80 - 100 C. =(. also check out www.resellerratings.com for Dell coupons, I waited for a 20% off one.
