I got a computer that a friend needs fixed. They have no clue what mobo it has and it needs a bios upgrade. Can anyone tell me an easy way to tell what type of motherboard it is?

Switch on the computer and just when it is counting memory, press the pause key.

Note down whatever is written on the bottom line of the screen, this is the description of your mohterboard. Note what brand of BIOS do you have, its the logo on the upper left corner of the screen.

You might have either AMI BIOS, or Award BIOS although you might have some other too. For AMI or Award BIOSes, go to <A HREF="http://www.wimsbios.com" target="_new">http://www.wimsbios.com</A> and check the list there. Follow the instructions to decode the BIOS string and then you will get the motherboard's manufacturer (so that you can visit their site for an update), the chipset on the board and the BIOS date.

Else, just send me the string and I will decode it for you.
