Hi.

After having an audio chat with my friend from the other side of Earth i
found that Messenger (particularly 6.2) delivers a very good sound quality
eating up all the modem bandwidth. I was just wondering if there was any way
to decrease the sound quality to get a faster conversation?

Get a faster modem. Are you using phone line, DSL, or cable?
