When I go to download the newer version of MSN Messenger (I have 6.1 now), I
get a red circle with a white X in the center on the #1 step to download...
where it tells me to "Please wait while MSN Messenger downloads". What does
this white X in a red circle mean? I, so far, have not been "forced" to
download this newer version. Am I suppose to try and download manually or
forget the download? Thank you for your help.

Greetings Mary,
It's trying to load an ActiveX control to download the file which you might have blocked
(which is okay). I see in your other post that you've managed to download and run the
installer, so you can ignore this.
