Trying to check if my old 686 M/Board can take an AMD k6/2 CPU. But first problem is to id the chipset.
Why is this difficult, when you can normally just read the label on the chip. ? Because the chip is covered with a flash looking aluminium "cooling fin". With TXproII printed on it. And the "manual" calls it "Pentium MMX, by Professional Main Board.

Any clues as to the chipset hidden under this "cooling fin"

The AMD K6-II CPU is compatibnle with all socket7 processors, so it is compatible with it. The only problem is whether it supports 100 MHz FSB (TXPro doesnt, its a TX clone from VIA) and that it provides 2.2V core voltage to the processor. And also, it must have three jumpers for multiplier selection, most TXPro boards have though.

Probabely the board will not support lower than 2.8V, and may not support a multiplier higher than 3.5 (but you can use the 2x=6x trick, setting the multiplier 2x is taken as 6x by newer CTX core K6-IIs, 350 MHz or faster ones)

As for the motherboard model and manufacturer, do this:
Start the machine and press pause while it is counting memory. Note down the entire string on the bottom line. This line has the complete information about your motherboard. The BIOS data, the chipset (Northbridge and Southbridge) BIOS code (that contains the chipset, manufacturer and chipset info) that can be decoded pretty easily. You should have wither AMI or Award BIOS. Go to <A HREF="http://www.wimsbios.com" target="_new">http://www.wimsbios.com</A> and follow the guide to identify your motherboard. Once you get the manufacturer, yoou can checkout his site for the manual and a possible BIOS upgrade.

If you can, just get me that string and I can decode it for you.
