XP Messenger app sharing not work out of the box: how fix?

I have xp sp2 with windows messenger 5.

When I try application sharing with another user( who also has the same OS
and
windows messenger) I get error message which says cannot perform application
sharing beacause I'm already in a session that precludes it. I could not
find any further helpful info on what the problem might be. Do I need to
open some ports manually, unplug the router....is there a wealth of
practical info someplace on how to troubleshoot TIA

Sure. application response says:

userA a invited you to a Application Sharing. You cannot accept the
invitation because you are already in one of the following: a conversation
using void or video, an Application Sharing session, or a Whiteboard session.
