Hi guys. I recently reformatted my harddrive because my computer was lagging so badly and no matter what I tried to fix it, it wouldnt stop. Well, after I installed Windows Xp after a while they whole conputer restarts. Before it restarts a message pops out saying that "NT Authority \ System has authourized a system shutdown and it the computer will shutdown/restart in 'x' amount of seconds."

Now this isnt the first time I reformatted it, more like the fourth. I have seen this same error pop out beofre my system restarts previously. The other error I got before as well was after I installed all my system drivers and shut down the computer for some time and tried to turn it on, it would give me an error msg in DOS as it loaded up saying "The file Windows/System32/config is either missing or corrupt. So I just reformatted again and reinstalled windows.

Since this isnt the first time I've seen these errors I was thinking that maybe my RAM is corrupt or even my harddrive? What do you guys think it could be?

Sorry for the lengthy post, but I am really confused and frustrated. Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it.

You have the Blaster worm. Get an antivirus, and do Windows update. Or if you dont have any antivirus, then go in administration tools, in services. You'll find Remote call procedure, or something like this. In the parameter, you'll find somewhere that if there in an error, then restart the computer, change that to either do nothing or restart the service. You'll be able to stay online to do windows update that correct the problems. Then, any spyware cleaner should be able to get rid of it.

Does the virus stay on my computer even if I reformat?

Reply to dakang

no, not when you reformat, but as soon that you get online.

I dont get it. After I reformat I didn't go online or use IE at all. I only got the restart prompt when I left the computer idle or was installing a driver. But, I was connected to a network at the time.

That all it need, a network connection to get to your computer and install itself because a bug in XP allow that. It's fixed in Windowsupdate, that why you should do it. If you were on a network, then the worm is riding across your lan. clean it.

It's a school lan, so there's nothing I can do about that. As for Windows update, I cant do it because when I try it say's that I have a pirated copy of it. Well, I did get it from my friend, so I'm not really complaining.

Whats the best free anti-virus software out there? All I need is a anti-virus program?

Reply to dakang

that I dont know. search the web for that.
