So many questions for this forum, feel like I have tapped into a fountain of knowledge and wisdom.
This one for today:
One time late on a night shift, during a routine inspection of my sewage plant equipement, I came across these little white worms. They were swarming together on the floor in a wet area near a floor drain. They were feeding on a small amount of sewage that had accumulated at that area.
So at first I was surprised. These were 1/2 to 3/4 inch thin white tube worms, with no easely differentiated features. This occurance, at that particular area, I had never seen in the 3 years at that plant.
I was puzzled. Remember it was very late at night on the weekend, I was quit alone in that plant at that section.
I bent down and began observing these littles creatures with great curiosity.
What happened next was what still has me thinking back to that moment over 1 year ago.
I actually begane to feel compassion for these lowly creatures. I was quite surprised too feel this way and kneeled down and obserded these creatures for a good long time. In fact I did not have the courage to hose them down the floor drain as every other technician would have done. I left them be and was proud to do so.
Now, what do I want from you? Well most evidently if anyone has ever felt this way and what meaning might this have.

aww, you big ole softy
well when i was younger, i was walking down the street and there was this baby bird, the thing didn't even have feathers yet or open eyes. somehow it ended up on the sidewalk which was probably a good 100ft from the nearest tree. anyways it was cut a little bit and there were so many ants on this thing at first i didn't know what it was. it was still alive, barely i imagine, it was just twitching every so often. so i stepped on it to put it out of it's misery. hey if i was being eaten alive by ants i'd want someone to step on me :/

Dorks = people that use their system specs for sigs.

Well oldbear, you know how much I hate to disagree with you, you do know that don't you? And that "pig without pants" is "water under the bridge", right? Hope soo!

Well, ok then. I will take you up on that.
My dad is 82. Now if he was on his death bed, suffering, and asked me to get close to him and whispered in my ear to "please unplug me"! I would or I would not. An act of compassion may sometimes require much courage. Yes I know that is a very simple minded example and there is a serious social debate that is ongoing about this subjet. But, that is what your bird example really does imply.
Damn tough one there!
I hope I would muster up the courage to ease that bird's suffering, and put it out of it's misery.
Oh, that looks so much like a can of worms.

Well If he would have touched the baby bird the mother would have smelled it on the baby and not let it back in the nest. That's why when you see a baby bird you either put it out of it's misery or take on the task of trying to keep it alive... which are you gonna choose?

Better put on your eye-glasses next time 81! The chick was at the brink of death and ants were chewing away at it. That mummy bird was outa there.
No, mbetea, made a damn tough moral choice and it's that act of chosing between life and death of lesser beings that is so morally provocative. Imagine such a choice about a dying and suffering family member.
Don't you just love these moral dilemmas?
Eh? eh?

I was just saying that it doesn't matter, whenever a chick falls out of the nest you have that choice.

Ya, that is a tough choice. Perhaps if the nest is easily accessible and the chick is not hurt you could wrap a few leaves around it, or a cabbage leaf, or a fresh page of white paper so as to keap the sent from your hands off the animal, and put it back.

Or call mbetea.

I would rather be unplugged than have him step on my head,
unless he's a giant.

I guess to the bird he was a giant.

Maybe momma bird was sorting the chicks.

Deep.

Reply to OldBear

Not sure how to take that .
If we are friends: you help in the stuffing or to stop the stuffing.

If we are not friends:you help in the stuffing or to stop the stuffing.
???????

I wouldn't do the stuffing unless you asked to be put out
of your misery.

What are friend for if not to be used?
