Just wondering if MAC address filtering is a viable security measure rather
than WEP. Thanks Tony

Why not use them both? (I do.)

It is best to use them both. Keep in mind that if you just mac filtering you will
block access to the WAP to unauthorized connections BUT others can still listen to
your network and if the data is not encrypted they will be able to capture data and
mac addresses that they then can use to access your network. Think of your WAP as a
radio transmitter which it really is. --- Steve

MAC filtering really isn't a security measure. Anyone with Linux and any of
several different 802.11 client adapters can see all of the MAC addresses
legitimately in use on your network - even if you are using WEP or WPA
encryption - and they can configure their adapter to use one of those MAC
addresses. The only thing that will stop them from actually monitoring your
traffic and using your internet connection is some form of encryption - WEP,
or better yet, WPA.

If you are not using some form of encryption, you should assume that your
net is completely open. A third party might be intercepting and reading
anything you send or receive, or even using your ISP connection.
