Hey folks new to the site. Looks cool and I like the reviews. But here is what I am looking for. I have $1800 to spend for a new system I want to build myself. I would like some help picking a mother board. I have been out of the computer world for about 5 years and will take any advice out there. I am going to get an AMD anthalon xp 2000 and want at least 512 ram with the geforce 3 ti500 or the new geforce 4 4400. thanks

$1800? Ouchy I wish I had your budget. You can build a nice system for just about 800, if you know where to look and what to get. I'll let the other guys here give you some tech advice, I'm still learning.

if you are getting the geforce 4, make SURE that it is not the mx version, because you would be better off getting a geforce 3 in that case.

get a GOOD powersupply, and GOOD ram.
with a budget like that, you should be able to get some pretty good stuff..
i would look at stuff like the iwill xp333, or other ddr333 compatible motherboards.
then get some name brand pc2700 ddr...

I've been using athlons for the last 3 years or so, until recently switching to the Pentium 4 1.6a. Many people have had good luck overclocking this cpu to 2.2 or even higher. I'm running at 138 fsb (2.2) by raising the cpu voltage to only 1.575 from a default of 1.5. The bottom line is that this cpu is more stable overclocked and runs about 5 degrees cooler than the athlon. I use the epox ep-4sda+ and it runs well on the fastest memory settings. The 1.8a also overclocks well. If you don't want to go with the p4, I would wait for the thoroughbred .13 athlon. It should run cooler than the xp.

You sound like me about a month ago.I just read some reviews, some posts, and looked at some price versus performance issues.Lots of info out there once you get a basic idea of what you want your system configuration to be.:)

If ya don't ask..How ya gonna know.

What do you plan on doing with this computer, for 1800, you can get a very good system. Also, I recommend whating until mid-March, as the new ATI card should be out and lower the prices of the current video card market:)
If I had $1800 to spend, (minus the monitor) here is what I would get:

Case: Lian-Li PC-70 USB Aluminum ATX FULL tower case $240

MB: Gigabyte GA-7VRXP AMD XP Via333 MB with RAID ~$115-150.

CPU: AMD ATHLON XP 2000+/266 FSB PROCESSOR CPU - RETAIL BOX $260.00

Memory: 512 MB Kingston DDR 2100 SD RAM $150

Video Card: ATI Radeon AIW 8500-D $306

DVDROM: TOSHIBA INTERNAL DVD ROM, 16X DVD, 48X CD ROM $58.00

CDRW: TDK 32X/10X/40X INT EIDE CD-RW $160

Sparkle 400 Watt PS $85.00

(3) 40GB Maxtor ATA 133 7200RPM HD $261

Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum Retail Box $170

Keyboard, mouse and all other Mis. items with the remaining Cash.

Most of these prices are from Newegg.com and include shipping costs.

If it works for you then don't fix it.
