Maybe a stupid question.
Could there be a reason for a mobo not to work outside of case.
I´ve tried if a (assumed broken) mobo worked just connected to ps and power switch

(was too lazy to replace the mobo currently in case)

You also need to hook up the cases LEDs, which will more than likely mean that you must put the MB in the cases (unless the cables for the case are long enough. Still, with the MB being flush on the surface, you might also have grounding issues. I would recommend putting it in the case, just so that you will not damage your board.

If it works for you then don't fix it.

"You also need to hook up the cases LEDs"

No he doesnt
All you need is what Crash said because even the reset switch can be stuck behind the external button and cause a system not to boot

Blame the newbies not the technology

So long as the mobo isn't sitting on anything metal it should work fine.
