windows update won't connect or install

Whenever i run windows update it always says error on trying to find driver updates. Worst, it won't install updates that are supposed to be critical. I have a 2ghz p4; upgraded memory from 256 to 512mb,upgraded a cdrw to a DVD+rw,added an 80 gb usb 2.0 HD with existing 40gb internal HD, upgraded geforce 4600 to geforce4 ti5700 ultra 128mb. I have two service provider Earthlink DSL and AOL that has been free for 2 years since they don't want me to cancel. Writing all this down so you guys can have a better idea on how to help me. Thank you in advance.

to be honest the first port of call for this is "ringing microsft" i know its a difficult one, btu the phone number is on the packet, and they have telephone staff that are good and fast to respond (based in some random forgien country)

this is because it is about a updating/ regestration type issue that i am recomending this.

but there might be other answers around here
