I found a popup message from time to time. Later I saw that one of the
system services called "Messenger" was automatically started and this
enabled the messages to popup.
My questions:

Is it started by the default installation that I have done 2 years ago?

Thanks in advance

Greetings,

Yes this service is automatically on by default in Windows 2000, XP Gold and XP SP1. You
should install SP2 immediately (for other reasons), which turns this off (among other
things):
