Just asking an opinion here. Which MB producer would you purchase a new sis645 pc2700 chipset from. Hopefully Tom's will do a comparison before I make a move. Anyone?

asus is good (i personally have the asus P4S333)...but its overclocking ability with the northwood chip is a little on the iffy side (i can get my 2.0A to overclock to 2.24...max)...
anyways...other than the fact that it cant overclock that well....it runs fast and stable...
another board that you may want to consider is msi's 645 ultra...

I would go with the Gigabyte 8SRX myself, because (other than the Soltek 85DRS2) no other SiS645 board uses the latest A2 stepping of the chipset.

<A HREF="http://www.digit-life.com/articles/roundupsis645feb2k2/index.html" target="_new">Here</A> is a pretty good roundup of the SiS645 boards out there.

None! While the SiS645 boards are dirt cheap, being that PC-800 RDRAM can be had for about the same price as DDR, I would opt for an i850 board and RDRAM. IMHO, this combo is still the best platform for a Northwood.

too bad intel is dropping rambus support...
but i agree...rdram is the healtiest choise for the P4 (although pc2700 ram comes close)....

I'd like to know where you got that from, it's just not true.

While Intel did announce that their new 850-E chipset <b>may not</b> support PC1066 (because it's much too expensive right now), they are absolutely supporting PC800!

As a matter of fact, PC800 Rambus now costs about the same as good quality brand PC2100. So unless one craves 'the thrills' of overclocking a DDR chipset, the i850 platform can't be beat for delivering the best P4 (stock) performance.

it was on <A HREF="http://www.xbitlabs.com" target="_new">xbitlabs'</A> website about a week ago...its not there now...
anyways...the i850-E is (if i remember correctly) going to be the last chipset from intel to support RDRAM...afterwords intel will be concentrating on ddr ram...

nevermind...you're right...i read the article wrong...the article stated that they dropped support for PC1066 RDRAM because of price (which you mentioned)...ah well...looks like i need to read stuff a little slower...
btw...i never said that RDRAM didnt give the P4 the best performance....the original poster asked about the SIS645 chip...and i gave him info on it...thats all...no fuss no muss...

Although I agree with IntelConvert's comments re: the i850 platform and Intel's support of RAMBUS, I too was just responding to the original question as to which SiS645 was best. But as long as he brought the i850 into this discussion, I would like to quote from AcesHardware's findings (from their new tests): "At stock speed, the SiS645 performs only 3% slower than the i850 chipset. As the boards based on the SiS645 are (much) cheaper, SiS645 definitely has the best price/performance ratio (between the two chipsets)"
