Will 2 new Celron chips work on a dual processor motherboard?

According to Intel no, this is one of the major disadvantages of the new Celerons as commpared to the older modles, If you want a Dual board, first make sure that you are doing any one the following:

Video editting

Setting up a web server/ home server with at least 5 computers using it at any point in time

High- end graphic development.

As Tom's HWG has stated before, most programs do not use a dual processor to its best capacity and you will be wasting money if you do not use software that would beniefit from the 2 processors.

If it works for you then don't fix it.

The only celerons that will do SMP are those based on the 0.18 micron core.

This place has a very biased view towards multi-cpu systems, and while many of the points made are valid all of them tend to be negative. There are thousands of reasons why multi-cpu systems are better and yet they are never even mentioned in any of the reviews. And you can now pick up two PIII-1000EBs, and a dual i815EB motherboard for not much more then US$300.

So don't be so quick to condemn dual cpus unless you have one and are unhappy with it. It's like SCSI - once you try it there's no going back.

Where can I find a deal like that? Thanks for the advice. I am going to be running Oracle 9i, so I really do need dual processors.

The only reason that I placed a negitive slant on dual systems is because I have found a lot of people who invested in them more for the "I have a Dualie Board" or they bought the hardware thinking they would use it but did not. I am all for dualie boards (I would actually use the resources as I do Video editing) and like to help others but would rather have money spent where it is needed and not the other way around.

If it works for you then don't fix it.

Before I go digging up the link for that motherboard again remember that the i815 chipset supports a maximum of 512MB of memory. I'm not sure if that'll be enough for you.

Those will run you about US$115.

Q: As this is a server, I take it you will not need AGP?

If you're just running a small database then you'd probably be ok with the above board and 512MB ram.

I know you originally asked about celerons so I may be going a little over your budget but if you're going full scale you could consider one of <A HREF="http://www.supermicro.com/PRODUCT/MotherBoards/RCC_LE/P3TDLE.htm" target="_new">these</A> which for US$250 includes ATI video and intel 10/100.

(<A HREF="http://www.supermicro.com/PRODUCT/MotherBoards/RCC_LE/P3TDL3.htm" target="_new">Also available with included ATI video, Adaptec SCSI, and intel 10/100 for US$400</A>)

(<A HREF="http://www.supermicro.com/PRODUCT/MotherBoards/RCC_LE/P3TDLR.htm" target="_new">Also available with included ATI video, Adaptec SCSI, and DUAL intel 10/100 for US$500</A>)

Or wait for the 0.13 micron AMD chips to settle out in price and pick up an MPX motherboard with the B2 stepping of the 768 southbridge.

And one more thing - Asus claims to have a working dual P4 (non-Xeon) motherboard based on the i845D chipset. It'll be interesting to see if it ever gets released.

Yep, the Abit BP6 with the 440BX Chipset. I have one with a pair of 500's running rock solid and cool 24/7/365.
