Should i use wpa-psk/tkip then? Will my laptop support that as
standard? Is it also standard that you can share a printer with it?
Thats a bit of a problem for me.

i was able to successfully and solidly run wep before i ran wpa. i wouldn't
advise going that way until wep works. i was just pointing out that i could
run a more rigorous security protocol without too much trouble.
the printer sharing comment related to no available printserver that runs
wpa yet. my printers are each hooked to different computers and are shared
by three computers two of which are wirelessly connected with wpa.

Doesn't matter. At one point in time, I couldn't get my Linksys WAP to
work with WEP, but WPA worked perfectly. If WEP isn't working, and WPA
is an alternative (both the AP and the laptop supports WPA), then go for
it.
