As usual, it depends on your needs exactly. For a dedicated small box exposed to the internet, I'd consider running <A HREF="http://www.openbsd.org" target="_new">OpenBSD</A>, with <A HREF="http://vsftpd.beasts.org" target="_new">Vsftpd</A> and a stripped down <A HREF="http://www.apache.org" target="_new">Apache</A>.

Basic linux web and ftp server HowTos are on <A HREF="http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/apps.html#SERVERHTTP" target="_new">The Linux Documentation Project</A>. Google has a few dedicated tutorials too, and most all distro websites have at basic webserver setup guide as well.
