if you're using windows zero configuration double click on the little
connection status icon and click on properties and a properties panel will
come up. select the wireless network tab, click on configure and on the page
that comes up there should be currently "wep" in the authentication box.
change this to wpa-psk and encryption to tkip.

you'll then just need to type in a plaintext passphrase rather than some
cryptic long key.

go to your wrt54g and go through similar stuff and use the same plaintext
passphrase.

it usually took a few seconds for everything to start working once you
closed all the windows of the configuration process. i found if i didn't
close all the windows it didn't begin working.

good luck
