Greetings Mark,

Are you using an older version of Messenger? If so, older versions if disconnected, didn't
handle the status properly. MSN Messenger 7 does handle this situation correctly though:

hi there

thanks for your reply

i am using the latest version

i believe it is related to the option "show me as away when i'm inactive for
n minutes" and/or the "show me as busy and block my alerts when i'm running
a full screen program..."

these options were checked last time...i have since unchecked them and my
status remained the same.

ie: at the end of the day i would set my status to "appear offline" and
lock my pc but in the morning i would come in to find my status was
"online". since turning off the above options the status has remained as
"appear offline"
